Title: You Can Call Me Mon-jelut
Fandom: Exo
Focus: Suho-centric
Genre: Gen
Rating: G
Length: Drabble, 200 words
Summary: Everyone has to adjust to the company's newest policies, but Junmyeon does his best to make it work. Monsters, Inc. AU.

Kim Jongin, age six. Easily startled.

In the days when screams were king, such a footnote would’ve been encouraging. Things are a lot different now though, and instead, Junmyeon sees a warning more than anything – they can’t scare kids anymore after all. Frightened children don’t laugh easily, and Junmyeon already has a hard enough time doing his job.

While waiting for the light over the closet door to turn red, Junmyeon fluffs the fur around his neck one more time, smoothing down his floppy ears as well. I’ve got this, he reassures himself as he twists the door handle and enters Jongin’s bedroom, smile wide and friendly.

“Jongin! Guess who!”

As expected, there’s a sleepy little boy in the room, wearing puppy-printed pajamas and a pout. He rubs his eyes and squints at Junmyeon without a hint of amusement on his face, unfortunately.

“A big bunny?” Jongin asks, blinking blearily as he takes in Junmyeon and his infamous dudumchit pose.

“Not a bunny,” Junmyeon insists, not quite sure what a bunny actually is, “I’m a monster. But a nice one. A funny one – the funniest!”

Jongin grudgingly chuckles, and just his smile’s enough to light up all of Monstropolis.

Success.

Prompt: Monster.
Author's Note: Written for EM's EX'ACT Drabble Competition's final round, and honestly one of the pieces I really wanted to write. I had actually been thinking about it before the final round, but only because the likelihood of "Monster" being chosen as a prompt was so high lol. It's an AU of my favorite Pixar film, Monsters, Inc. and a play on how Suho continues to insist that he's the funniest member of Exo. I thought Kai would be the most fun to have as Suho's assigned child because he's so easily startled but is often depicted as somewhat sullen and solemn, haha. Anyway, the type of monster Suho is... is probably something resembling a giant rabbit, considering he's the bunny king lol.
This is the dudumchit pose by the way, very well loved by Suho lol. Monjelut (몬제웃) is a pun on Suho's "exjelut" nickname. Exjelut (엑제웃) is an acronym for "the funniest (member) in Exo", so naturally monjelut would be short for "the funniest in Monstropolis" lol, so adding that to a line from Monster's chorus gave me the title. Laugh with me, please.

Anyway, that should be the last of the drabble competition fics. It's been... a little under a year since the actual competition, so the fact that it took me this long to repost my entries... is kinda sad lol. I've had a lot going on in real life, not necessarily a lot I've been happy with, but being able to revisit writing that I was happy with was very nice. I'd forgotten how happy I had been, as well as exhausted, and I think one of my biggest regrets is that by not reposting sooner, I wasn't able to remember all the thought and planning I'd been putting into these drabbles, which is my entire reason for such long, meandering author notes. But I'm happy that I helped Suho's team win, finally. It's kind of sad because I feel like this might be the last event for EM, which seems to have slowly started dying. My own interest in Exo and EM has cooled a bit too, although Suho and the others are still very dear to me. I want to keep writing, but I don't know if I have anything interesting to tell, or if I have the confidence to try to write it. I hope this isn't the last thing I post on here, even if it's the last thing I've completed.

Title: Playing Favorites
Fandom: Exo
Focus: Xiumin-centric, Chen/Xiumin
Genre: Gen
Rating: PG
Length: Drabble, 200 words
Summary: Gamemakers weren’t supposed to pick favorites – just victims. Hunger Games AU.
Warnings: Mentioned off-screen character deaths.

“Where’s the District 5 boy?” a fellow Gamemaster asks, jerking Minseok’s attention away from a projection of a small island on the arena’s map. With every camera feed the man flicks away, his scowl deepens. “Does he need smoking out?”

“No,” Minseok answers before anyone else can agree, “I’ve got my eye on him.” That apparently satisfies his coworkers, who continue terrorizing the other Tributes instead of redirecting their attention to the remarkably uneventful adventures of Kim Jongdae.

So far, no one’s noticed the feeble threats Minseok’s planted around Jongdae, or how the whirlpools he introduces into the surrounding ocean only kill off kids coming after Jongdae. Waiting as the competition takes each other out isn’t an unusual tactic after all, even if it’s more Minseok’s plan than it is Jongdae’s.

Actually, if anything, Jongdae doesn’t seem to have a plan. He’d been like that during the skill assessment, too, displaying only mediocre spearing skills and far too much sweetness to survive these games. Gamemakers weren’t supposed to pick favorites – just victims – and yet here Minseok was, throwing softballs at the kid.

“You better survive,” he sighs as he watches Jongdae, “considering how I’ve stacked the odds in your favor.”

Author's Note: Written for EM's EX'ACT Drabble Competition's final round. Despite promising myself never to write a Hunger Games/Battle Royale AU, here I am with a pretty obvious one. I do think I managed to spin it in an interesting way, although since I don't regularly read these AUs, I don't know how unique it is, haha, though I usually see just tribute romances. Anyway, this is playing with the idea that Chen is kind to the point of foolishness, I suppose, and that Xiumin can be such a cheater when he plays games lol. Oh, Chen is from District 5 because electricity. Haha.

Summary: Junmyeon and Jongin aren't quite friends. Not yet, anyway.

His knee twinges just looking at the staircase leading out of SM's basement level. It’s a familiar feeling – the ache, the weariness – and Junmyeon wishes Minho was still around to help him up.

“Sunbae,” Someone calls out, hesitant, distant. A voice he’s not intimately familiar with, that has always lingered in his periphery instead. “Need some help?”

Junmyeon turns back towards Taemin’s friend, a polite smile masking his earlier grimace. “Oh, Jongin, you didn’t leave yet?”

“Lost track of time,” Jongin explains quietly. Junmyeon expects the conversation to stop there considering their admittedly impersonal interactions usually end that quickly, but Jongin surprises him. “Is your leg hurting? I could give you a lift.”

The concern is new. From how he usually rejected Junmyeon’s friendly offers of after lesson meals, it had seemed like Jongin only cared about his dance practices. Junmyeon feels his smile softening into something real.

“I’d appreciate that,” Junmyeon says, choosing honesty over courtesy for once since Jongin’s done the same. “Hyung will treat you to ddeokbokki later, okay?” he insists as they start slowly making their way up.

“You don’t have to…”

This time though, Junmyeon doesn’t think he’ll let Jongin get away with a no.

Prompt: It all begins (began) here.
Author's Note: Written for EM's EX'ACT Drabble Competition's final round. Inspired by several anecdotes shared by Suho. The first (if I remember correctly) was that he and Kai were not actually that close until about two years into their training together, the second was that Suho would regularly treat the other trainees to food, and the third was that during their predebut period when Suho had his leg injury (around 2008-2009), Kai would offer to give him piggyback rides when leaving the practice rooms because Suho was in so much pain and he would've had to walk up and down the stairs in the SM building otherwise.

Suho and Kai's relationship has always been something I'm fond of looking at, not just because I ship them lol, but because they were the two longest trainees and they were both very close with SHINee. I wanted to write from that angle, that due to not being close yet, they might've seen each other as the "friend of a friend". It actually doesn't show too much, but I also wanted there to be an underlying current of... Not quite heartache, not quite loneliness, but something close? After Super Junior debuted in 2005, SM had wiped out most of their male trainees, to the point where Jonghyun was mentioned as either one of the few remaining trainees left before SM accepted more, or the first of the new generation of trainees that would eventually become SHINee and EXO. And Junmyeon was right there around the same period, and if I remember correctly from what Chanyeol and Sehun once mentioned, he was considered part of the "hyung/sunbae" group of trainees. He was rather close to SHINee, especially Jonghyun and Minho, to the point where they thought they might debut together, but then SHINee debuted and his leg injury happened and no one knows what happened in what order but I think I wanted the aching feeling Suho feels in this drabble to be the result of both, although it can easily be attributed more to the physical pain. But Suho here is also feeling worn down because his closest friends have debuted without him. A lonely feeling. And it doesn't show quite as much, but I originally wanted Kai to feel something similar due to the absence of Taemin and how that would affect his rather introverted nature. Maybe it made him more willing to reach out to something like Suho after their initial interactions seemed to do the exact opposite of taking off. Who knows. But in the end, they became very close, although I couldn't show that here obviously. Close to the point where Suho was considered Kai's mentor, where Kai was the one Suho went to when he ran away from home.

I think friendships, relationships are interesting, probably because I'm not so great at them myself. I wanted this drabble to be about how the two of them had to reach out for each other, and maybe it was in extenuating circumstances where Suho needed the physical aid or they were both lonely because they had been left behind by those closest to them. But more than that, there had to be earnestness on both sides I guess? Kai's earnest desire to help someone, Suho's earnest gratitude rather than the polite courtesy and his own desire to truly deepen their burgeoning friendship.

By the way, the "step" in the title is a pun. First step up the stairs, first step of their friendship. Not a very good one, but a pun nonetheless lol

Summary: Xiumin brings a present for a special friend, and a prank too.

Summoning sprites is normally a difficult task, usually requiring ridiculously rare ingredients and complicated rituals. Luckily, Junmyeon’s one of the easier ones to call out.

"S-S-Stop that!" he chides through chattering teeth, his head poking above the lake’s surface. Minseok feels the light swipe of a webbed hand and quickly withdraws his finger from the water before he receives more than a smack. Unfortunately for Junmyeon, the threads of frost Minseok had created remain, prolonging the chill. "Just throw in an offering like a normal mage! Now I’m freezing!”

Minseok laughs, lowering his hand again so he can draw out the cold in icy wisps, returning Junmyeon’s waters to their usual temperature. “Sorry, sorry. I won’t do it again.”

“You shouldn’t lie,” Junmyeon sighs, whether out of exasperation at Minseok’s antics or in relief at the lake’s warmth. “I could curse you for that.”

They both know Junmyeon wouldn’t though. Beneath the scales, Junmyeon is one of the softest creatures Minseok’s ever met. Plus, he takes jokes pretty well, honestly.

“After I got you a present from the mainland?” It’s just a small trinket, bought during a run to the apothecary. But Minseok watches, pleased, as Junmyeon’s eyes light up.

Author's Note: Written for EM's EX'ACT Drabble Competition's final round. This was sort of written on a whim, though an anon did ask earlier for a possible Suho/Xiumin drabble due to the lack of it thus far in the competition. It feels like it should be a small part of a larger fantasy story, but I honestly don't remember putting too much thought into it other than the idea of Ice Mage Xiumin ironically making the water too cold for Naiad Suho lol. Maybe capturing Xiumin's more playful, teasing side due to a meta discussion I had with an anon on KFA2 about the different facets of his personality. Anyway, the relationship between them is probably meant to be platonic but can be taken however.

Summary: Jongdae comes up with a (in his opinion) terrible plan. Minseok is all for it.

“You’re basically my wife anyway,” Minseok replies easily when asked. Jongdae is surprised to find that for once, he doesn’t sound flustered at all. The casual way he accepts the offer actually makes Jongdae’s blood rush to his cheeks, the need to wail into his hands growing ever stronger.

“How are you so calm about this?” he whines instead, face pressed against the cold, unforgiving surface of the table between them. He deserves it for coming up with this whole con. “We’re going to be lying to everyone and for what? Just to take advantage of couple deals at coffee shops?” Each cup is going to be bitter with guilt and regret.

“They’re great deals, I’m glad you told me about them” Minseok argues gently as he takes Jongdae’s hand and rubs soothing circles into it with his thumb. “We’ll just spend an extra five minutes in the confessional next weekend then, right after the marriage vows.”

“Your jokes are worse than Junmyeon hyung’s these days. You are worse than Junmyeon hyung these days.”

“That’s not true,” Minseok says, resting his head on the table as well so he can meet Jongdae’s eyes, “otherwise you would’ve asked him out instead.”

Prompt: Artificial Love
Author's Note: Written for Round 3 of EM's EX'ACT Drabble Competition. Based off of the facts that Chen and Xiumin are huge coffee fans, that Xiumin called Chen his wife during their "Trip Without a Manager" show, and how someone said during EX'ACT promos that Xiumin's jokes were becoming worse, like Suho's lol. I didn't realize it at the time but I also somehow managed to capture how Xiumin is perfectly fine with white lies if he thinks it won't hurt anyone and if it's beneficial to him lol. It wasn't as clear then, but after his Exomentary radio show with Chen where he suggested a fan lie to her father about Chanyeol being a boyfriend she broke up with rather than an idol she liked, plus after his Vivi magazine interview where he said he would just apologize to others without knowing why he's apologizing just to keep the peace... Haha, he is less sincere with his words than I thought, but not maliciously. It's funny.

Ngl, as much as I like fake dating fics, I've always found it hard to considering writing them because the premises were so ridiculous lol. Why would Xiumin and Chen have to lie to everyone when they're just lying to stores? I guess the explanation could be that a friend could see them and out them, but that's rather flimsy lol. Anyway, last notes: title taken from 10cm's Americano + a pun with the word "con". And I really wanted to use the confessional line haha.

Summary: Kim Junmyeon pieces Oh Sehun together, pixel by pixel.

“Sehun.”

Junmyeon watches the sharp eyes on his monitor, how naturally they soften upon landing on him. Thin lips curl into a sheepish smile, and he remembers the smirk they replaced -- Sehun’s default expression before Junmyeon had expanded his visual references to decades-old SNS accounts overloaded with more casual, cheerful snapshots of his subject. He must’ve clocked in dozens of hours on reprogramming that correction, but it’d been worth it.

“Morning, hyung.” The greeting’s somewhat awkward, syllables slurring together. Junmyeon would suspect a coding error if he hadn’t specifically studied the cadence of the real Sehun’s voice, analyzing every decrepit FLAC file he could dig up in order to perfectly recreate it. “Need your schedule again?”

“No, Sehun,” Junmyeon chuckles, gazing down proudly as his pet project pokes at his desktop’s shortcuts. The avatar idly, unnecessarily, adjusts the seam of its pants with a strange leg wiggle, its mannerisms identical to the real Oh Sehun.

Junmyeon’s no Frankenstein, and there’s no technology yet that could revive famous strangers lost to time. But even if the Sehun of flesh and bone was long gone, maybe one of pixels and codes could outlast even the digital remnants its inspiration had left behind.

Prompt: Artificial Love
Author's Note: Written for Round 3 of EM's EX'ACT Drabble Competition. Tbh, I felt like this was leaned a bit on cheating because this was actually an idea I've had since... 2013? After watching some science documentaries about the future of AI and digital avatars. But in the end I never really acted on it so it's been wallowing around for ages. Anyway, so this is a story set in the far off future, where Suho is a programmer who creates an AI of Sehun, who was a celebrity in our present-day, as a pet project of his. Suho uses all of the information left on the internet about his subject, like Sehun's instagram posts and audio and video files of him, in order to create an avatar as close to Sehun's likeliness as he can get. I tried my best to show that it was set in the future by referring to the SNS accounts as old, and FLAC files as decrepit when currently they're one of the highest quality audio file formats we currently use.

There was actually supposed to be a longer story to this, where as Suho researched more about Sehun, he started falling more in love with Sehun. The real one or this recreation? I'm not sure to be honest haha. The digital Sehun was going to be an AI that learned as time passed, but the only way Suho was going to be able to bridge the distance between them was leaving his own avatar behind so that maybe one day the two of them would grow to love each other naturally, long after Suho himself has passed away. Obviously I couldn't cover that in this. Idk, I feel like my wording of it is poor, but I really can't think at the moment haha. But yeah, because of that, I could only really address the "Artificial" part of the prompt, more than the love. Though at least, most pet projects are labors of love.

Title comes from a word meaning "making something real, bringing something into being, or making something concrete". It has a meaning in computer science as "the process by which an abstract idea about a computer program is turned into an explicit data model or other object created in a programming language" which I took to mean Suho taking the idea of Sehun and turning all of the aspects of him into a new whole, something more concrete than just facts like how he spoke and how he stood around. I'm probably using it wrong, but that's what it sounded like to me lol.

Title: Leveling Out
Fandom: Exo
Focus: Chanyeol-centric, platonic Chanyeol/Suho
Genre: Gen
Rating: G
Length: Drabble, 200 words
Summary: They've never been the closest of friends, but after Exo records their Christmas episode of Showtime, Chanyeol and Suho have a talk.

“That book was actually meant for you,” Chanyeol admits grudgingly once Minseok’s out of earshot. He doesn’t know why he even bothers – Junmyeon had been thrilled with Kyungsoo’s vitamins, had obviously meant for that self-help book of his to go to Sehun. As responsible as Junmyeon tries to be, it’s hard to deny he plays favorites, and Chanyeol’s never been on his nice list.

There’s something about Junmyeon’s expression now though, under the dim Christmas lights of the hotel room rented out for their latest recording. Not quite skepticism, but there is a question there, written all over his face.

“I’ve already read The Little Prince. Multiple times, even.” His voice is soft, tentative.

“I thought…” Chanyeol hesitates, decides to take Junmyeon’s attention as encouragement for once, “a dorm copy would be nice. And that maybe you could discuss it with me sometime. I could use some new material, for my songwriting?”

There’s a small quirk to Junmyeon’s lips. He reaches up to gently ruffle Chanyeol’s hair like he never has before. “I’d like that.”

Chanyeol looks down at Junmyeon the way he always has. But for once, it feels like he’s finally seeing eye to eye with his hyung.

Prompt: The Little Prince
Author's Note: Written for Round 3 of EM's EX'ACT Drabble Competition. This is set in November 2013, right after the recording of Showtime's Christmas episode. It always amused me that Chanyeol ended up gifting a copy of The Little Prince during the present giving game, since it's actually Suho's favorite book. (Honestly, I was a little annoyed at a reader who though I shoehorned the book into this scenario, when I'm drawing this based off actual facts. Hmph lol.) This is also based off of the fact that Suho and Chanyeol have said they're not too close (never forget the 17% synchronization rate lol) but that they're still friendly, and truth be told, have known each other for a very long time. (There's even a picture of Chanyeol at Suho's high school graduation! Though not a pic of the two of them together lol.) Suho also said recently, now that he's getting into songwriting, he's been getting a lot of advice from Chanyeol since Chanyeol has more experience in it.

The title comes from the idea that the two of them never really matched. There was actually a line I had to take out, "Chanyeol doesn't ever remember Junmyeon being taller than him, but now he feels so small", partially because of the word count but also because I didn't... want Chanyeol feeling small. I did want him to feel like Junmyeon's dongsaeng, but even then I wanted there to be the start of a bond between the two of them, or an agreement to try. The looking down part might've been a little mean on my part though, given the metaphorical meaning of it making Chanyeol look a little bad lol.

Hm one more note: I made the very conscious decision not to write anything based off of the content of The Little Prince, because the story isn't as universal as people like to think. There were three really lovely quotes in it I would've loved to use as the inspiration for drabbles, but I don't think it would come across to nonreaders nearly as well.

Junmyeon can only hear blood pounding in his ears, his world muted despite the managers still speaking. Chanyeol’s already yelling, but Junmyeon doesn't know how to even find words when the only ones in mind are lawsuit and what now? Betrayal tightens his throat, traps even those words inside.

As the others are herded out of the waiting room, still in make-up and stage outfits, he hears someone say “We’re taking you back home.”

“It’s our comeback -- we’re even expected to win.” He can’t stop himself. “Everyone will be watching.”

“Exactly.” Yongmin says, sympathetic.

“One of us should be here.” They both know that’s not true though. The boys watch him, and Junmyeon wonders, worries about them. “I’m staying.” He sounds stronger than he feels, will need to from now on. “I will never let us down.”

Even on a crowded stage, Junmyeon feels everyone’s eyes on him. The others should be safely sequestered away already, every stumble and tremble escaping scrutiny.

This is what a leader does, he tells himself firmly, gripping onto the proof of all of their efforts. No one’s taking this away from them.

He clears his parched throat and brings his microphone to his lips.

Prompt: "Trust me on this one"
Author's Note: Written for Round 3 of EM's EX'ACT Drabble Competition. This is set on 05/15/14 -- the day of Exo-K's belated Overdose comeback following the Sewol Ferry tragedy, and the same day Kris filed his lawsuit to terminate his contract with SM and leave Exo. I have a lot of feelings about that day -- overwhelmingly negative feelings, enough to stir up my blood even now, because I find it so unfair that Exo had to pick up the pieces after someone made such a mess out of their own greed and ambition. I don't think I can ever explain how painful watching
Suho accepting that award alone on stage was, knowing that everyone in that room had heard about the news, not knowing what would happen to Exo when they had finally just made it. It was supposed to be a glorious day for Exo, but it was such a painful one instead. I still start to cry when I think about what they went through, what Suho had to go through standing on that big stage all by himself and I don't know how anyone could not be bitter that he was forced into that position, where he had to put on his brightest face and continue performing for the fans, and everyone who wanted to see Exo fall. Fuck, I'm crying now.

The research I did for this mainly focused on the timeline of events. The lawsuit was filed approximately two hours after Exo-K had already started their pre-recording, and given how long pre-recordings run, it's entirely likely they were just finding out about the news as they finished up at Mnet Countdown. Suho accepted Overdose's first win and made his acceptance speech ten hours later. Those ten hours were hell for me as a fan, who had little to no idea what was going on. I can't imagine how hard it must have been for Exo and for Suho, who ended up on that stage whether by orders or of his own volition. From what we know about Suho's personality though, about how seriously he takes his role as Exo's leader and protector, about how committed he is to Exo... I feel like it's highly likely that Suho chose to get up on that stage, even when the easy answer would have been to hide away at SM. They had already recorded their performance, and winners are missing from the encore stages all the time and they had just been hit by their first big scandal -- it would have been completely understandable for SM to keep the boys away from any media presence. Honestly, this was one of the lowest points for Exo, and I have so much respect for how Suho handled it and the fact that he handled it, and I have no respect for anyone who can't see that or even attempted to twist his words.

Now, about the actual drabble. I actually hesitated a lot before writing this, before submitting it, because compared to my previous Suho introspection pieces, this one was a lot more raw and covered such a sensitive issue. I personally hate going through fic that covers this period, but when I saw the prompt... "Responsibility", "commitment", "trust"... those are words I strongly associate with Suho. And I wanted to write a moment where everything was so uncertain for Exo, but Suho took this horrible event and stood firm and tall and told his members and their fans "you can trust me". That while Kris was a leader who utterly failed at his duties, who threw away that responsibility -- Suho wasn't like that. Refuses to be like that. Suho has said that being a leader doesn't come naturally to him, but I think what it comes down to is that Suho is the one willing to step up to do whatever it takes to lead, and to do what he thinks is best for the group. The last paragraph of the first scene is loaded with double meaning, and while I know for sure I meant that for the last line of dialogue in it, I can't say for sure I meant to do that with the first two lines of dialogue in that paragraph because it's been so long, but it fits.

In the second scene, I think the only real clarification I wanted to make was that what Suho's holding onto is the trophy. What a bittersweet victory. But I think what I wanted to establish was this was Suho trying to reclaim this win, this day, this comeback. It will forever be associated with the first member departure, but Suho did as much as he could to make this as much about Exo and their fans and the victory they shared together. My heart still goes out to him, will always go out to him.

To be honest, I did worry that some readers would see it as a cheap grab for emotional points, but I didn't really approach this drabble that way. This was primarily about Suho's feelings at that moment. About what it means to be a leader. Sigh, I've probably spoken too much about that lol.

I debated a lot on the title because there were two songs that I felt really tied into this and I wasn't sure which one I should turn to for inspiration for the title. In the end, I chose neither because I ended up coming up with "Volition" which is defined as "the act of making a choice or decision; the cognitive process by which an individual decides on and commits to a particular course of action. It is defined as purposive striving". I felt like this best described what happened in this drabble: Suho is very consciously making choices, proving what those choices are and what they mean -- staying on stage, staying for the group, in the group. The two songs I had been debated with though still deserve mentions though. The first one that came to mind was
Yuya Matsushita's Trust Me, the lyrics of which I found very apt since it was about reassurances, a promise to stay together and support each other during difficult times. The second song was Exo's Stronger from their newest album.

"Even on days that were like a
storm that comes for no reason
Everything’s just gonna be fine"

"When my heart wore out
you became the strength
that filled me up"

It wasn't that the whole song suited the theme of this, but Suho's lines actually matched what I meant for him here. It's actually amazing how well it fit together. Reassurance, reliability, responsibility. I honestly don't know how he couldn't be respected. I really... adore him haha. Suho, hwaiting~ God, this is a long A/N.

Summary: Chanyeol enjoys his break with Kyungsoo. Sorta.

"Red Velvet, Taemin, Tiffany noona," Chanyeol pauses as he counts them off on his fingers, checking for any signs of a roaming Baekhyun because amiable or not, a break-up was still a break-up, "Taeyeon noona. We should’ve known they would’ve eventually sent us over here for filming too."

"It's practically as much of an SM tradition as someone breaking their leg. Or a lawsuit," Kyungsoo agrees dryly. He wipes at the endless sweat forming at the nape of his neck, but honestly, he deserves it for insisting on his all-black nonsense despite knowing California was very obviously much hotter than Seoul. Chanyeol wonders at his chances of Kyungsoo stripping off his shirt like the rest of them already have, at how long that stubbornness of his can hold out.

Besides Kyungsoo’s lack of cooperation though, Chanyeol can’t really complain. The MV shoot’s been more of a vacation than a job this time around, especially after they had gotten the dance scenes out of the way. If he closes his eyes, he can pretend he’s on a real break, not just from filming. That Kyungsoo’s sitting beside him on the California coast because he wants to, not because he’s on standby.

Green truck with legs dangling from the truckbed and a California license plate.
Author's Note: Written for Round 2 of EM's EX'ACT Drabble Competition. Does this actually have anything to do with the song California Dreamin'? Nope. Haha. The title just got stuck in my head since this is set in Cali, and Chanyeol is. Daydreaming, I guess haha. Written based off of the fact that the truck in the prompt picture had a California license plate rather than anything else, but also the interesting trend of SM MVs being filmed in California. A lot of Kpop MVs have actually gone to Cali for filming... I wish they would consider Florida too, our beaches are nicer haha. (Another trend I've always found amusing is the inevitable leg injury in an SM group. Less amusing are the lawsuits, but alas.) This was a cheap grab at Chanyeol/D.O shippers on EM tbh, not that it did me much good. Enough to get Team Suho to Round 3 at least haha.

Summary: In the middle of a photoshoot, Junmyeon takes a moment to take in how much Sehun's grown.

Sehun stretches beside him on the grass -- lazily, carelessly, heedless of the cameras zooming in on them and the staff scurrying around them -- and not for the first time does Junmyeon find himself transfixed. A little envious even, because what he wouldn't give for Sehun's ever growing height and the way his modelesque figure managed to salvage even the most ridiculous styling.

"You've grown so much," Junmyeon can't help commenting, eyes trailing down Sehun's long torso, his longer legs. His ankles peek out from between the hemline of his pants and his shoes, not entirely by design.

A small, smug smile spreads across Sehun's face. "I couldn't stay cute and pocket-sized forever, hyung. Not like some people."

It's easy not to rise to the bait, especially when Junmyeon’s known Sehun for as long as he has. Long-earned affection filters every one of Sehun’s misdemeanors in Junmyeon’s eyes, transforms them into love bites as gentle as Byul’s.

“You’ll always be cute to me,” Junmyeon assures him, leaning over to rest his head on Sehun’s shoulder. It’s easier to manage, lying down together like this instead of standing side by side. The distance between them doesn’t seem quite so far.

Author's Note: Written for Round 2 of EM's EX'ACT Drabble Competition. I enjoyed this one a lot, and it was a pretty simple piece (although there was a voter who gave me negative points because they didn't see how it tied in to the prompt :|! I was quite frustrated haha). This is set during a photoshoot kind of like what Exo did for Pathcode/Second Box. I wish I remember more about what I was thinking as I wrote this, other than that I've always wanted to write something about how Sehun was once so small, especially predebut, and there are hyungs like Suho and Chanyeol and Xiumin who have watched him grow over the years, and in Xiumin and Suho's case, watched him outgrow them physically. How they have to reconcile the fact that he may always be a child to them, but he's grown up so much lol. I think I originally wanted a hint of Suho feeling like Sehun's outgrown him in more ways than one, especially with that distance line, but generally this is a more surface level idea that didn't delve into that. I do like to think about how all of those years together have smoothed out most problems between Suho and Sehun, who seem to adore each other in real life very much. Honestly, I just hope I captured a snapshot of their relationship more than anything.

Anyway, this was inspired by the fact that there are two sets of legs dangling from the trunkbed in the prompt pic and they are of different lengths. I got the nostalgic atmosphere from listening to BTOB's Remember That/Memories of Spring

Summary: Jongdae is rescued in the mountains by a kind stranger.

“I would’ve frozen to death out there if you hadn’t come along,” Jongdae admits as they finally approach the village. Already, he envisions the fresh meal from the local inn, the warmth of an actual bed. It’s been a week since he last enjoyed such luxuries -- one long, cold week.

Minseok nudges him, stronger than Jongdae expected. “Don’t be silly. No one’s frozen in these mountains in decades.”

“Because your mountain god wouldn’t allow it?”

He heard the stories while researching his photography assignment, found them cute, but outdated. Maybe he shouldn’t have said anything though -- Minseok’s fallen unnervingly silent. Yet, when Jongdae turns towards his new companion, he only finds a playful smile.

“Mountain god?” Minseok chuckles, amused, “Didn’t realize city boys were so superstitious.”

“I didn’t order coffee,” Jongdae tells the innkeeper, puzzled.

“It’s not for drinking,” she answers. “I saw who led you into the village. Take it to our shrine, you gotta say thanks somehow.”

It’s not Minseok he finds at the shrine later, but rather his guide’s mirror image, etched into stone. At his feet are winter flowers, and other cups labeled with gratitude for the village’s protector.

No wonder Minseok had laughed.

Prompt:
Snowy Village. (Concept Art of Kanbalar from Tales of Xillia)
Author's Note: Written for Round 2 of EM's EX'ACT Drabble Competition. I actually spent the longest on this out of the Round 2 drabbles, and it ended up getting the best score in the round so it was worth it, haha. This was definitely a drabble where I really felt the limits of the word count, and a lot ended up edited out just so I could make it. I really needed to have those two distinct scenes though, so Chen could have his revelation. A funny thing was that I debated a lot between using Mountain God or Snow God, but felt like that latter would've been to obvious given Xiumin's assigned superpower while the former was more... common? In folklore and legends and what-not. Mountain deities that protect the people living and traveling through mountains.

Anyway, if the story's not clear, Chen works as a photojournalist for some sort of National Geographic-esque publication, with his current assignment being a journey through some mountains, which he did research a little beforehand. During his trip, he ends up lost and the local Mountain God ends up helping out as usual and leading him to the safety of a mountain village. The villagers are completely aware of Xiumin's existence and even have an shrine set up for him to show their thanks for his continued protection. I honestly think it's pretty straight-forward, but just in case haha. I really wanted to include the coffee cups because it does move this story up towards the present, in a way the brief mention of Chen's job doesn't really? It would've been really easy to set this back in like... medieval-ish times, but it reminded me too much of RPGs (which wouldn't be bad? in this situation given the prompt's origin) and that was not an angle I wanted to go with this time around haha.

It was actually a surprise how popular this was in the competition, it seemed a few of the voters really liked my interpretation of the prompt lol. I personally felt it was kinda. Stunted? I guess that's the con of writing it and knowing how much detail you had to take out in order to make the whole story fit. I'm glad that it was still liked though.

Summary: Junmyeon takes a short break.

Surprisingly, SM's rooftop is left unsecured. One would think that for all of the shattered hopes and dreams tiling its immaculate corridors, the company would be more cautious about that, but as long as Junmyeon's been a trainee, he hasn't heard of anything beyond small squabbles and lunch dates up here.

Regardless, that works out for him. The crowded practice rooms below are reeking of pessimism and sweat, and everyone he had bumped into on his way up had been testier than usual given the upcoming evaluations. They all needed some fresh air, though Junmyeon seems to be the only one to act on it.

He’s not surprised it’s already dark out after stepping out of the stairwell, the city lights already illuminating the skyline. Losing track of time is easy when the windows inside are covered by SM’s silly curtains and the only passage of time that matters to anyone is the length of a song. He takes in the late night chill, exhales as he turns his gaze up towards the empty, endless sky. The only stars in Seoul are in buildings like SM’s, Junmyeon remembers, his chest tightening in pure longing.

“Soon,” he tells himself. Promises himself.

Prompt: To the Stars
Author's Note: Written for Round 2 of EM's EX'ACT Drabble Competition. I kinda wish I had reposted this a lot closer to when I first wrote it so my memories of what I was thinking would be fresher, but a lot has gone on since the competition back in June... I've been so busy lol. Hopefully I remember enough. I was actually really worried about this piece, because I thought it veered too closely to my first Suho introspection piece in Round 1 and that it would feel repetitive, but there's something about Suho's predebut experience that always draws me in? I always wonder how he felt during that time, because 5-6 years is a long time to feel uncertain and adrift... I'm kind of in the middle of something like that too which makes it sting a bit more haha.

This was based off of one of Suho's interview answers from the EX'ACT albums, about how he would people-watch on rooftops and how it made him feel calm? He's mentioned it too when talking about scuba-diving in Fiji and entering such a vast ocean, and going to the Grand Canyon and seeing the massive view there. That such sights make him feel so small, that they make his worries seem smaller. And I think that's something that really does help him, considering how full of worries he can be.

Other than that... I think I just really wanted to write a little about trainee life in SM, haha. I wanted to include as many references as I could from what I knew and what I've inferred, and there were a lot of lines in the last paragraph that I especially liked, like the star one. I remember faintly that I wanted to bring up that you can't really see stars in Seoul, so I was lucky to be able to make use of that. As for the title... I debated a lot on this -- you don't really title drabble submissions after all, haha -- but I decided to go with "Intermission" when I meant a "break" and Suho "getting some air". I didn't want to use "Get Some Air" despite it being a song title that sounds nice, but I did want that feeling... And while we know "break" is a temporary thing, the second meaning of it could've come into play which isn't something I wanted given its more permanent connotations. I didn't want to show Suho "breaking", I wanted to show him taking a moment for himself, reaffirming what he's doing and what he wants. "Intermission" worked a lot better in that aspect. Ha, so much thought into one word.

Summary: The Kim family has a Big problem.

Jongin's hands are folded behind his back as he hunches over, as if to make himself smaller. An impossible task, considering the way he currently towers over all three of his older brothers, his head nearly banging against their ceiling. Jongdae glances between Minseok and Junmyeon and wonders which one will address the very large, Jongin-shaped elephant in their living room.

"What have we said about accepting food from Baekhyun?" Junmyeon starts sternly, crossing his arms. He's got that disappointed look Jongdae absolutely hates, that he only resorts to when he knows his usual genial approach won't get him anywhere.

Minseok nods his head in agreement, standing firmly in support of their second eldest. "You ate a mushroom off the ground. It probably wasn't even washed." He sounds more upset about that than Jongin's glaringly obvious disobedience, honestly.

The pout on Jongin's face is more pronounced than ever after his scolding, and not even because of his new size. "If I didn't, Jjanggu would've finished it off!"

"Jjanggu?" Jongdae asks, his heart sinking. His face pales as he's answered by a bark that echoes far too loudly and the sight of a giant black puppy nose outside their window.

Prompt: Alice in Wonderland
Author's Note: Written for Round 1 of EM's EX'ACT Drabble Competition. I wanted to go for a playful angle and decided to focus on the size-changing mushrooms in Alice in Wonderland lol. The sad thing is that having so many characters squeezed into 200 words means characterization couldn't be too fleshed out, but I think I captured what I wanted of each Kim? Suho is responsibility, Xiumin is support and reliability (and cleanliness lol), Chen isn't quite so severe and just follows along with the others, and Kai... is a bad decision maker lol. This was fun to write, sigh. I really love Kim Bros lol. I actually had a lot of ideas for AiW as a prompt, but unfortunately I had work and limited time so I only got to try this one out. Pity.

Title: Compass
Fandom: Exo

Length: Drabble, 200 words
Summary: Everyone's heart comes with a compass, pointing to their heart's true desire.

It's been a long time since the compass in Junmyeon's hand has held so steady. Far too long, he thinks, feeling more than ever the lingering ache in his left knee. He'd gotten used to the sight of its needle wavering between the SM building in Apgujeong and his university in Seokgwan, had forgotten what it felt like to know which path his heart had truly wanted as both the silence from upper management and his experiences in his university's acting department piled up.

Now, it points to the stack of unsigned papers in front of him, and the offer that had come along with them.

It's not the first time SM's promised him something over the past five years. But it is the first time they've promised a debut, as real as the contract clutched between his fingers, so close he can already see himself on stage, microphone in hand rather than the compass he's spent the past few years checking uncertainly. He feels fifteen again, when everything he'd ever wanted had seemed within arm's reach.

"Follow your heart," everyone says, and for once Junmyeon does find it that easy, thanks to the compass his heart's come along with.

Prompt:
Lucky One - No matter, this silver compass / Will point to you
Author's Note: Written for Round 1 of EM's EX'ACT Drabble Competition, based off of the lyrics of "Lucky One". It's really based off two short lines bringing up a compass, but as I was discussing connotations with a friend, I remembered the compass from "Pirates of the Caribbean" and how it points to what your heart wants at that moment and it was hard to throw the image away after that. Obviously this is set pre-debut, when Suho was offered his position in Exo.

I drew a lot from
one of his Glory Day interviews, about how he actually mentally wavered when it came to deciding whether to continue as an idol trainee with SM or to remain at K-ARTS and pursue an education and career in acting, maybe even becoming a professor. K-ARTS has a strict policy about their students not engaging with the current K-entertainment industry while enrolled -- that's the reason other idols like Kim Himchan and Lee Joon also were forced to leave K-ARTS after their debuts, why Kim Go-eun had to take a hiatus after filming her breakout movie -- so Suho literally had to choose between SM and K-ARTS despite the fact that his enrollment into K-ARTS was what brought him out of his slump/depression after his leg injury, and was a source of great, personal pride for him. In the end, Suho chose Exo and for that I'm so happy, but he did say that he debated over it for a very long time, which I think is natural after suffering years of uncertainty at SM while accumulating a lot of more positive experiences at K-ARTS. I think what ultimately would've drawn him back was the actual promise of a debut, of what he wanted for so long.

It's funny, but I had actually meant for this drabble to go in a completely different direction. The original plan was for Suho's heart compass to always be pointing towards SM because he was so certain that he wanted to become and idol, and so far no conflict had been brought it between that and his K-ARTS attendance. But once he got the offer to join Exo, his heart was going to waver because he was finally going to have to choose between two things he felt really passionate about. The first draft of this was:

It's been a long time since Junmyeon's compass has spun quite so wildly. Not nearly long enough though, he thinks, feeling more than ever the ache in his left knee. He had gotten used to the sight of the arrow of his compass pointing straight ahead regardless of which direction he turned, towards a future he always dreamed about whether awake or asleep. Gotten spoiled, the way his fellow trainees and classmates had always teased him about. Not everyone is lucky enough to know what they want.

Apparently that holds true for Junmyeon as well.

It's not the first time SM's promised him something, though to be fair they've kept most of their promises to him over the past five years. But the promise of a debut -- so real, so close he can already see himself on stage -- makes him feel fifteen again, when everything he ever wanted had seemed to be within arm's reach. But university has given him promises too, promises a stage as well.

He's given his own promises to both. He doesn't know which one he's willing to break, and neither does his compass, it seems.

I actually liked it a lot, but I felt like it wasn't working and I couldn't end it the way I wanted to. So I took a chance and tried writing it from the opposite angle, and found that I was much happier with that. There are some lines in this version that I miss, but ultimately I'm happy. I wish I could say the same about the title lol

Summary: Minseok and Jongdae watch the sun rise over Paris, but not quite.

Minseok sets his laptop down in the empty chair across from him, angling the webcam towards the morning sky and the city skyline instead of himself. It's not as good as seeing the City of Light in person, but neither he nor Jongdae can really help the fact that SM's design team had seen fit to fly them off to opposite sides of the world for their latest album photoshoot.

"I bet you're loving this, aren't you, hyung?" says Jongdae's distorted voice from the laptop speakers. He sighs, long and wistful and loud enough for his microphone to pick up. "The Eiffel Tower at dawn, a freshly brewed cup of coffee. What more could you ask for?"

'Company,' Minseok thinks as he leans back into his chair, clutching his cooling drink closer in lieu of Jongdae's soft hand. There's just enough warmth left for him to pretend it's enough. 'You'.

Prompt:
Silhouette of a person drinking something and sitting alone on a balcony in front of the Parisian skyline at daybreak.
Author's Note: Submitted for the EX'ACT Drabble Competition's Round 1. It was actually the last one I finished writing, submitted right before the deadline. In retrospecct, I liked it a lot more than I expected. It's only 100w because I was rushing, but originally I was planning on mentioning that Chen was sent to Vietnam for his shoot and Xiumin finding a sort of irony in that, and hoping that Chen's trip went smoother than his own did this year when hundreds of fans kinda ruined his trip... Anyway, honestly the part of the prompt that inspired me the most was the fact that there was an empty chair in the picture next to the silhouette. That and the Eiffel Tower standing tall alone gave the picture a sort of lonely atmosphere. I really wanted to write Xiumin for this prompt as well, because the pink sky made me think of daybreak and he mentioned in his album interview that that was his favorite time of day lol

Last note: the title is meant to refer to Chen having to watch the sunrise through a webcam and Xiumin having to use a video chat and that coffee cup as a substitution for the lack of Chen being there to keep him company. It doesn't adhere to the proper definition of proxy, but the connotation matches I think.

Summary: Minseok knows what to expect in the facility.

Minseok knows the women in white are there to pick him up even before he hears the clacking of their heels outside his door. As expected, the noises stop right outside his cell rather than the others', replaced by the unlocking mechanism's beeping. The women don't speak, though it's not like he requires instruction. He lies down on the gurney they've brought along, allows them to strap him down. Minseok knows how this goes. Knows exactly where they're taking him.

As they wheel him away, he closes his eyes and sees only white -- white uniforms and corridors and bedsheets. The white ceiling of the operating room they've brought him to once he's reopened them.

Unsurprisingly, Kyungsoo is already there, similarly bound but struggling against his restraints unlike Minseok, who watches, passive.

"Procedure will begin in five minutes," the intercom states. Warns. Kyungsoo jerks even more wildly as a woman empties a syringe of a familiar black serum into his bloodstream. Minseok's body relaxes just like Kyungsoo's, and even more so as his restraints are undone.

He's handed his own white lab coat -- the same white as the facility and the sclera of Kyungsoo's pleading eyes.

"Please. My gloves as well."

Prompt:
Lucky One - MV
Author's Note: So some backstory first: EM ran a week-long(-ish) drabble event called "EX'ACT - Last Opger Team Standing" based off of the old "Seouldout - Last Fanfic Writer Standing" challenge, where everyone would be given one day to write and submit drabbles (100wc, 150 wc, or 200 wc in length) based off of mod-presented prompts for Exo members. The teams the drabbles were for would be kept anonymous and other anons would vote on them based off of whatever criteria worked for them. I was pretty excited actually -- I was a huge fan of the original Seouldout and even indirectly participated in the last round on my own when I was first starting out in Exo ficdom. For this event, I wrote for Team Suho... and was probably one of the driving forces behind it lol. I contributed to 16/21 of his fics and 217 points out of the 221 points earned by his team throughout the event... One anon does make a difference lol. Anyway, he ended up winning an event for the first time. Yay!

Anyway, this drabble performed pretty well, was the top scoring one of Round 1 and got a lot of positive feedback, which was flattering. It was based off of a lot of pre-comeback speculation that Xiumin had always been working against the other Exo members since Overdose/Pathcode era due to a series of coincidental visual cues. The MV teaser for Lucky One actually made him and Chen seem kind of suspicious, though ultimately SM didn't seem to go down that route which is a pity. I spent really long working on it, but now that I'm reposting it I don't have much to say. Maybe I'll add in a comment later or something. But I was really pleased with this, I think it was one of my favorites.

Title: Officially Missing You
Fandom: Exo
Focus: Sehun-centric, Sehun/Suho
Genre: General
Rating: G
Length: Drabble, 663 words
Summary: Sehun is an overdramatic, sulking baby who misses his hyung.

The sun is already sinking past the city skyline outside of Sehun's window by the time he bothers to poke his head out of the covers, his long legs still tangled in his sheets. Well, technically not his sheets -- Sehun's aren't as cartoony as the ones he's been using for the past few nights, decorated with the smiling faces of Pokemon characters he can't even identify. They don't smell like more blends of herbal tea than his nose can handle and they're long enough to cover him all the way down to his toes without him having to curl up.

He sighs, burying his face back into the pillow. Also not his.

It feels like forever since he's slept in his own bed rather than Junmyeon's. It feels like it's been forever since he's even seen Junmyeon, since he's watched the left side of his face do that cute involuntary twitch or heard his awkward laughter after a joke has fallen flat. The piles of dirty laundry in their room haven't been washed, but they also haven't grown at all and Sehun thinks he misses that just as much as the frantic way Junmyeon used to dig through them in hopes of unearthing a clean shirt.

"Sehun, I know we don't have a schedule today, but you can't stay in bed all day," he hears Minseok call from outside of the bedroom. He probably won't dare to venture in though, not considering how he and Junmyeon's natural messes seem to get along like oil and water. Sehun is safe to sulk in Junmyeon's bed as long as he wants.

"Hyung, just let him," Chanyeol says, softer than usual, "he's been like this since Junmyeon hyung..."

The way he trails off makes Sehun sigh even more deeply, and he inhales the scent of his missing hyung from the bed for the nth time. It's makes it easier, sleeping alone without his Junmyeon hyung, without his constant bedtime companion. It's not quite the same as staying in hotels around the world, knowing Junmyeon was just down the hall and easily roused if Sehun needed him for anything. But their bedroom back at the dorms is supposed to have the two of them in it no matter what -- even though Junmyeon doesn't take up that much space, the room just feels so empty.

He misses Junmyeon. So much he feels the ache in his bones, worse than any of his neverending growing pains.

The ringing of his phone interrupts his sulking, muffled underneath pillows and sheets and buried deep enough that by the time he fishes it out, he knows the call is about to disconnect.

"Hello?" he says dully into it, not even bothering to check the ID displayed on its screen.

"Sehun-ah."

Immediately he sits up, clutching the phone more tightly to his ear. "Hyung?" Is that you?"

He hears laughter in the background, of Junmyeon's costars and the staff filming on location with him. Feels his lips slipping into a pout at the idea of Junmyeon having so much fun without him.

"Of course it's me, you punk. Jongdae called me and told me to tell you to get out of bed," Junmyeon chuckles, sounding tinny over the line but familiar enough, "what trouble are you causing while I'm not there?"

"I'm just so lonely, hyung," Sehun whines like an absolute baby, curling up into a ball, knees pressed against his chest. Junmyeon would fit in that spot perfectly, but for now he has to make do. "I have to sleep all by myself. When are you coming home?"

He hears Junmyeon sigh, though it only sounds a little exasperated. "I'll be back before comeback promotions begin. I promise, Sehun."

That's not nearly soon enough, Sehun thinks. But there's a strain in Junmyeon's voice that he's heard far too often lately, so instead he just lets Junmyeon chatter about everything that happened during the day's filming and pretends it will be.

Author's Note: Written for a fake Free Kick (timed 30 minute prompt writing challenge) on EM. I posted hours late but I really did write this in 30 minutes haha. Title is from Geeks & Soyu's "Officially Missing You". It's set during May 2015 in-between Exo's CMB and LMR promotions -- that was when Suho started filming Glory Day during which he had to stay in a dorm on location in Pohang. He's mentioned in interviews since that Sehun was the one who cheered him on the most regarding the filming, and that Sehun was always telling him about how lonely it was having to sleep alone since they share a room (and I'm pretty sure they've been sharing a room since debut-era no matter how many times Exo's moved or rearranged rooms lol) and with Suho gone, Sehun has the room all to himself lol. I love roommates Seho. Suho even said he would have Sehun as his roommate until death haha. I don't think Sehun would actually be this needy, but I wanted to play around and make him dramatic because it's just a meme fic, nothing serious haha. The strain Suho feels is from Betraydol #3 and the stress of Exo's upcoming repackage promotions and filming his first movie.

Summary: Being an immortal rain spirit doesn't mean Junmyeon is above getting a little payback.

Junmyeon would say he takes little pleasure in his job, of being the assigned rain spirit of a small rural region, but that would be a blatant lie. There are more plants out there that need his attention compared to the big, concrete cities, and the residents are a lot more respectful of his position. The elder ones anyway, who had grown up grateful for every drop of rain and each sprout resulting from his favor. As for the youngsters...

He watches from a distance as Oh Sehun slips, falling even further behind the other, older children. The kid is small now, but from the shape of his face and the lines in his palm and the alignment of the celestial bodies at the time of his birth, Junmyeon knows he's fated to shoot up like one of the trees Junmyeon's kept an eye on since it was a mere sapling, his body reaching for the sky even if he doesn't quite seem to have the disposition to do the same in his endeavors. Hopefully one day he changes, blossoms, flourishes into someone who makes Junmyeon proud of the fact that his roots started in this little town, nourished by Junmyeon's rainwater.

Right now though, he's the brat who picked his nose at Junmyeon's shrine though, wiping it on one of the pillars the groundskeeper tried so meticulously to keep clean. Spirits, even ones as old and wise and benevolent as Junmyeon, could not stand for such disrespect.

"Sorry, kid," Junmyeon says with not nearly enough sincerity as he wiggles his fingers in Oh Sehun's direction. The rainclouds that were supposed to water the crops later get shoved over and squeezed ahead of schedule, showering down on the boy's small body instead, and Junmyeon can't help but chuckle a little when Sehun starts to whine.

Suho failed to rank very high, which was a tragedy considering how much of a Star Wars stan he is, but I did my best and wrote some Star Wars!AU stuff I was pretty proud of. Not this though lol. This was written as I was about to eat dinner so it wasn't given my full attention lol. But Suho's grudge-holding and Sehun's brattiness are things I really do adore, haha. I'm always a bit uneasy about writing about spirits though because I get so caught up in the logistics like age and the region jurisdiction, but I made an exception here.

Summary: Minseok may or may not be too cute for Jongdae to kill.

Minseok just sits there all day in the corner of the room, nibbling on carrots and sunflower seeds and completely ignoring the fact that Jongdae was here first. Granted, it's not like he's as bad as Chanyeol, whose long limbs are usually splayed all over the place without any regard for other's personal space and belongings or communal areas, nor is he like Baekhyun who blatantly steals things from everyone else if he happens to feel too bored only to get away with it as soon as he shoots those puppy dog eyes in everyone's direction. But Jongdae's gotten used to them, has grown fond of them even no matter how often he ends up whining at them to move over or return his things.

Minseok, however, is different. For one thing, he's a hamster.

Honestly, Jongdae isn't quite sure what Junmyeon was thinking when he brought home a cage with a tiny little rat inside, small and fluffy and quick in a way that made it hard for Jongdae to look away without his stomach growling. Something about Minseok makes Jongdae's tail twitch, causes his claws to involuntary extend even when he isn't in the mood to knead anything.

"He's part of our family now," Junmyeon reminds him when he catches Jongdae staring a little too intensely, pupils blown. "You can't eat him. He's very nice."

Jongdae simply purrs as Junmyeon scratches behind his ears. He's sure it probably sounds like he's agreeing with his owner, but as he keeps his eyes trained on Minseok, he knows it couldn't be further from the truth.

"Soon," he meows, even when the way Minseok looks over and smiles at him gives him pause.

Summary: As a couple of the only Padawans left in the Jedi Temple, Sehun and Junmyeon give a warm welcome to one of the temple's newest occupants. Star Wars!AU

"I always thought all of Grand Master Yoda's people were..." Junmyeon's voice trails off, and not just because they're in the library and need to maintain some degree of quiet and respect. His face scrunches up as he tries to bring to mind whatever word he's looking for, twisting into that weird expression that makes him look a little constipated.

"Bad-ass?" Sehun offers, only to be rejected with a quick shake of the fellow Padawan's head. "Old?" Yet another rejection, though this one kinda startles Sehun -- it's hard to imagine someone like Grand Master Yoda as having once been a youngling. He racks his brain for more suggestions, mentally pulling up the images of both the Grand Master and Master Yaddle. "Uh, green?"

"Diminutive," Junmyeon finally admits in a muted whisper, covering his flushed face in shame, as if either of the two most skilled Jedi in the Order would care about being called such. Though, coming from someone of Junmyeon's stature, it is a little hypocritical.

As far as Sehun knows though, Junmyeon's initial assumption is correct though. He knows for a fact that Grand Master Yoda and Master Yaddle are both barely sixty centimeters tall, and from the holocrons he's checked out of their battles, they had both always been that size. In all of his studies, he hasn't come across anything imply otherwise, or even visual records of any other members of their species. The galaxy is a pretty big place though, and despite being the largest collection of knowledge in the Galactic Republic, the Coruscant Jedi Archives don't actually hold everything.

He narrows his eyes at Junmyeon. "You found out something, didn't you?"

"I got to meet one of the Master and Padawan pairs from the Silikan Stillness," Junmyeon starts, though Sehun interrupts before he can explain any further.

"That bookbarge that was scheduled to come in yesterday?"

Junmyeon makes a flicking motion with his fingers and uses his control over the Force to flick at Sehun's forehead without actually getting his hands dirty. "Don't call it that! It's a Corellian Colonizer!" His expression turns reverent, and not for the first time does Sehun wonder why Junmyeon hadn't instead turned to starfighters rather than archives given his enthusiasm. "But yeah, it's the one that docked yesterday. I went with Master Kyuhyun to help with welcoming the Jedi who've decided to stay with us for the time being, and one of the Padawans I met was... like Grand Master Yoda. Except tall."

Imagining a tall Grand Master Yoda is actually a lot harder than Sehun thought it'd be, and all he can come up with is a green, rubber-limbed creature with those familiar, gigantic ears. It doesn't look right at all. "There's no way," he immediately argues, "whoever you met has got to be another species. I bet they weren't even all shriveled and and wrinkly like Grand Master Yoda."

"Yeolda isn't wrinkly because he's like centuries younger than Grand Master Yoda," Junmyeon tells him, rolling his eyes. "But he's got the ears and the three fingers and the same speech patterns and everything. He's just. Really tall. Unfairly tall."

Junmyeon probably just means tall compared to Grand Master Yoda and Master Yaddle. Like seventy centimeters instead of sixty. For a species that tiny, even that small difference would seem huge. "Whatever," Sehun says, rolling his eyes right back at Junmyeon, just because he knows it irritates the other Padawan, "I'll believe it when I see it."

It takes less than a day for Sehun to see it.

"Sehun, you must be," the tall, green, giant-eared, three-fingered alien greets him with a smile that's wide, friendly, and utterly terrifying, "Yeolda, I am, but call me Chanyeol, friends do." Just like Junmyeon had insisted, Chanyeol is tall even by human standards, and he's not wrinkly at all. His skin looks as smooth as Sehun's own, his hair thick and dark, more like Master Yaddle than Grand Master Yoda. His amber eyes somehow brighter than any of Coruscant's three moons.

"Uh, yeah," Sehun mumbles, only continuing with his greeting when Junmyeon nudges him in the side with one of his bony elbows instead of the Force for once, "welcome to Coruscant, Chanyeol."

It's strange, having to actually look up at someone who wasn't a full-fledged Jedi Knight or Jedi Master. It's partially because most of the older Padawans they'd grown up with had left with their Masters to train themselves throughout the galaxy unlike Junmyeon and Sehun who had Masters and positions and paths of study that kept them stationed at the Order's headquarters instead, and partially because the few Padawans they did still see were fresh out of the Initiate stage, still younglings in the grand scheme of the universe and in their own cultures, yet to reach their destined heights. Even Sehun has a few more centimeters left in him before he stops growing, unlike poor Junmyeon.

"Very cool, Coruscant is," Chanyeol answers happily, looking around wildly even though Sehun can't imagine how different the Jedi Temple could be from one of the praxeum ships they have flying around the galaxy. There would still be Jedi of all ranks running around with holocrons and lightsabers regardless of whether or not they were in the temple or on the Silikan Stillness. Those things were basically entire cities on a single ship from what he's heard, even better maintained than most planets on the Outer Rim. "Looking forward to exploring, I am."

"We could show you around, couldn't we, Sehun? We've grown up here our whole lives."

Sehun blinks, probably for the first time since he's laid eyes on Chanyeol. "Yeah, we have. We could," he agrees, taking in Chanyeol's mega-watt grin. He wonders if this is what being under a mind-trick would feel like, except he's pretty sure no one would dare to do such a thing to fellow Jedi, especially in the sanctity of the temple.

But he's not quite sure how else to explain the foreign pounding in his chest, brought on by the sight of this alien and the way his ears curl and uncurl as he rambles nonstop to Junmyeon about training on a praxeum ship instead of a proper Jedi Temple, of his experiences throughout the galaxy on planets the two of them have only heard of in their lessons.

"You know," Sehun says later that night, when it's just him and Junmyeon again because Chanyeol had to go meet up with his Master to discuss his future training on Coruscant, "Grand Master Yoda's kind of cute."

Junmyeon makes a face. "Sehun, he's a millennium older than us. Please don't tell me this is going where I think it's going."

"What? Oh, gross, no!" Sehun's pretty sure his face matches Junmyeon's right at that moment, and he shoves the other Padawan's shoulder. "I just meant... His species? They're pretty cute guys. The ears are cute."

He feels his skin prickle under Junmyeon's stare, and not even in that nice tingly way the Force is supposed to make him feel. The way meeting Chanyeol had made him feel.

"Sehun," Junmyeon finaly says, clasping a hand on his shoulder with a strange look in his eyes, "be careful, okay? Meditate a little more on the Order's teachings and calm your heart." There's something about the way he says it that leaves Sehun uneasy, and he probably pulls away from Junmyeon a little more roughly than he intended.

"My heart is perfectly fine," he mutters. Lies. He doesn't remember ever lying to his friend before, not over something that wasn't like where the last pastry on his plate had disappeared to. "I was just saying. Don't we have to love and appreciate all beings in the galaxy?"

"Equally, yes," Junmyeon agrees hesitantly, his voice making Sehun's stomach twist into knots, "make sure to remember that part, too."

Original Post: Here.
Author's Note: Written for SWAU. Based off of a quote from Sehun during their Star Wars-themed Vogue shoot in which he said something along the lines of "Because I like Chanyeol, I started liking Yoda too" when asked about his favorite character. I'm actually really happy with how much of the Star Wars universe I managed to squeeze into this, but that just means I have a lot to explain too... haha. I'm gonna go mostly in the order that they show up.

So part of the story involves the species to which
Yoda and Yaddle (who is honestly pretty bad-ass if you read her biography, like seriously) belong to, which has never been specified and of which little is known because of Lucasfilms' gag order and guidelines to anyone involved in Star Wars and its expanded universe detailing how they are explicitly not to explore it. This lack of specification actually came in handy seeing as I could add Chanyeol as a member of their species (due to his fairy ears lol) and fudge details like the typical short stature and the ridges on their foreheads. I know I shouldn't think about him and Sehun getting together, but I am shallow and like my human-humanoid alien romances to not be too squicky, so yes, I made Chanyeol an green-skinned alien babe. I decided to go with Yeolda as his given name because of its obvious similarity to Yoda and Yaddle, although there is technically no naming scheme when it comes to their species.

Next... so
holocron is short for "holographic chronicle", which is basically a hologrammic book/data storage device. Sehun and Suho would have access to probably the largest collection of holocrons in the galaxy considering they're stationed at the Coruscant Jedi Temple, which is basically the headquarters of the Jedi Order and home to the Jedi Archives, which was the largest collection of knowledge assembled by the Jedi. The Jedi Temple on Coruscant wasn't the only place where Jedi lived and trained, as there were other, smaller, and sometimes more specialized temples on other planets throughout the galaxy. Coruscant was the seat of government and the center of the galaxy though, so of course it had the biggest Temple. Other places where Jedi lived were on were starships that traveled throughout and explored the galaxy, and praxeum ships were specifically starships on which young Jedi were trained though they also ferried researchers and traveling Jedi. The Silikan Stillness was one of the most renown praxeum ships I read about in my research.

So, about being a Padawan. Basically the progression as a member of the Jedi Order is Initiate -> Padawan -> Knight -> Master -> Grand Master. At a very young age, before they even properly bond with their families, Force-sensitive children (younglings) are detected and brought to a Jedi Temple (or praxeum ship) to be trained to harness the Force and to learn the Code of the Jedi. When the kids finally reached early adolescence, they would undergo trials to determine if they could become Padawans (those who didn't left the Order), who were basically apprentices to older, more experienced Jedi. Most Master-Padawan pairs would then leave their home temple to allow the Padawan to earn experience by working throughout the galaxy. Sehun and Suho are obvious exceptions here -- likely apprenticed to Masters who had to remain in the temple, like the Chief Librarian or other more clerical/administrative work, who were training the two of them to take their place. Chanyeol, having been raised on a praxeum ship, would thus get more traveling experience than the two of them and their theoretical knowledge. Suho probably envies this a bit, because he's always wanted to travel more, has always loved starfighters as much as the archives.

Last major thing: the Jedi Code appears to call for a lack of emotion in order to ensure peace, and a lack of passion to ensure serenity. This is to encourage Jedi to be as objective as possible, considering they are considered the galaxy's peacekeepers. Attachments to other people were supposed to be discouraged, but really because the Jedi were to love everything and everyone so they could do all they could to protect the majority rather than those they were biased against. The closest they were kinda allowed were the other younglings who grew up in their clan and their Jedi comrades and Master, though that was expected to come a lot closer to camaraderie than familial love. So when Sehun feels the stirrings of a crush on Chanyeol, Suho is actually warning him once they're alone. It's actually something that the few comments I got on EM failed to notice, because it leaves the oneshot feeling a bit uneasy. Despite Sehun's feelings, he technically isn't supposed to explore them, at least in a pre-Empire/New Republic Jedi Order that strongly discouraged it. The Jedi Order wasn't perfect, and there were a lot of reasons why it fell. It's an interesting read, but that's as much as I need to cover lol.

But yeah, so this was titled "Expectations" because there were Sehun's expectations of Chanyeol's species, and then there were the expectations expected out of him from Suho and the Jedi Order, to not feel anything towards Chanyeol. I'm glad I found a title I liked.
