Haven't done one-sentence challenges in a while. Felt nice. Used this generator.

D.O / Chanyeol - panic

Chanyeol can't help flinching when Kyungsoo reaches over from his seat with a sardonic grin -- maybe he had teased him a little too much this time -- but instead of the sharp smack he'd been expecting, Chanyeol feels Kyungsoo's arms wrapped uncomfortably tight around him, his face buried in Kyungsoo's chest at an awkward angle, the breath forced out of his chest at Kyungsoo's sudden display of tenderness.

D.O / Kris - otome boyfriends

Intimidatingly designed Wu Yifan had been programmed with three distinct characteristics: a docile personality, easily won affection if given enough game-bought gifts and flattering words, and -- in the case that neither were being effectively courted by the player character -- the ability to woo and win over Do Kyungsoo, the hardest ranked bachelor in the game.

Suho / Xiumin - cutting your losses

Trainees always leave quietly in contrast to the ruckus made when they're first accepted into SM once they've understood that making the massive investment in training doesn't actually guarantee a debut, but as Minseok watches another slip out of the dorms and into the night with their head hung low, he catches Junmyeon's eye and knows neither of them are ready to give up quite so easily.

Baekhyun / Lu Han - beach houses

As the others wrestle in the sand or wade in the low tide of the Jejudo beach that had been chosen as the location of their summer MV, Baekhyun sneaks into the rented beach house in hopes of claiming the master bedroom, only to find Lu Han already sprawled out on its bed and glaring at anyone who would dare approach his newly claimed territory.

Tao / Tao - teacher's pet

The black cat lounging on the professor's desk grooms himself to perfection for a quarter of the period before finally shifting into the form of the class's missing Transfiguration professor, who smiles all too smugly with a self-satisfied, kittenish grin and his wand twirling between his fingers.

(a/n: Not what you were expecting from teacher's pet, eh? lol)

In honor of part 66 of EM, anons sounded like they were planning on doing a fic-focused part for all 66 potential pairings. Unfortunately, things got derailed because of Exo's activities in Russia, but I figured I could still at least give one-liners and prompt generators a try. It's kinda late right now and I still want to shower, so I'll probably add my author's notes in the morning. The generators used were this, this, this, and this.

ETA: It's morning.

suho / xiumin - meant to be

It's easy for others to forget that Junmyeon's always been a maknae -- his family's second son, his class's precocious age-breaker -- when he becomes the leader of a group of boys, three-fourths of whom are even younger than him; but when Minseok sits across the table from him and lets him spill his worries over the first warm mug of coffee Junmyeon didn't have to pay for himself in ages, he finds himself easily slipping back into the role of dongsaeng and basking in the simple pleasure of being the one taken cared of after having the burdensome weight of responsibilities and expectations shoved on his shoulders.

(a/n: Instead of going for the "meant-to-be soulmates" approach, I decided to tackle the age hierarchy relationship between Suho and Xiumin. I've seen the topic discussed before, but never in-depth and never in fic, about how their relationship must be if Xiumin is the hyung but has to defer to Suho due to the leadership status. It probably helps that with Suho's age-breaking, they might consider each other chingus. But two things Suho said -- about wanting to return to a time when his parents took care of him and how he relies on Xiumin (and Lu Han) to discuss things he can't share with his dongsaengs -- stuck out. For a long time, Suho was probably used to being the youngest, even if he was one of the longest lasting trainees in SM. So when Suho gets to rely on Xiumin like this, he's returning to that position of being the dongsaeng taken cared of.)

D.O / D.O - reasons

If he were ever found out, Kyungsoo would state that it's not narcissistic at all to fall asleep to the sound of his own voice -- if anything, he thinks it would be perfectly understandable given how utterly offensive to the ears everyone else's voices are in comparison, even on the occasions that he misses a note.

Kris / D.O. - silence

Kyungsoo is especially ill-tempered after the doctor prescribes a few days' worth of rest for both his body and his voice in response to a sudden cold, with his usual looks of apathy and judgement escalating into full-blown stink-eyes every time someone so much as warbles in the shower and accidentally reminds him of his misfortune; it's only because Kris is rather quiet by nature -- and thus preferable to the rest of the boys -- that Kyungsoo does little more than silently tsk at him for bringing in bland, watery soup from a can.

Kris / D.O. - supernatural

It's far from an even match -- Kyungsoo can stomp around all he wants, but his fissures can't do much to an opponent hovering meters up in the air -- but what goes up must eventually come down, and even if Kris has a ridiculously unfair physical advantage as well, Kyungsoo is used to standing his ground against odds like this.

(a/n: Supahnatural powah. No, I tease. This is more inspired by Pokemon actually -- ground type has a disadvantage against flying type. Not that they're Pokemon in this. I mean, they could be? But that wasn't the intent lol)

Kris x Chen - burning and praying for more

Their first night in the Chinese dorm is eventful in that Jongdae shoves his bed against Kris's and insists that it's the best remedy for his case of homesickness, and if this remedy just so happened to include Jongdae's body curled up next to Kris, branding his skin wherever Jongdae's warm flesh made contact under their sheets, then maybe Jongdae could stand to stay homesick a little while longer.

(a/n: Chen's a sneaky bastard, they're hot for each other. I'm not suited to write Krischen, where's paca when you need her...)

Title: Road-Tripping
Fandom: Exo
Focus: Lay/Xiumin, implied one-sided Lu Han/Xiumin
Genre: Humor
Rating: PG13
Length: Drabble series, 716 words
Summary: Lu Han wants his best friends to bond and sends them on a surprise road trip.

Xiumin x Lay - He didn't know where they were going, just stepped on to the first bus came along.

"I'm doing this because you're my best friends and I love you and you guys should love each other too," Lu Han insists, echoing himself in Mandarin immediately afterwards just in case Yixing didn't understand the jumble of Korean running out of his mouth, "and a bonding experience is exactly what you two need before all three of us can really start having fun together!" He's on the sidewalk looking up enviously at the bus window Minseok is sitting next to like he's making some incredible sacrifice for their benefit.

Minseok just rolls his eyes and waves half-heartedly as the bus takes off to wherever it is Lu Han picked for the two of them that morning. "So what now?" he asks, already feeling the awkwardness seep into the empty space where Lu Han should be between him and Yixing.

Yixing just blinks at him, as dazed as when Lu Han had announced their impromptu trip and slapped a small envelope of spending money in his hand.

"I think he wanted me to blow you? Is that what he meant by bonding?"

Xiumin x Lay - So the issue you're skirting around... we're trapped in here aren't we?

They're hours into their trip and Yixing has attempted to stick his hands down Minseok's pants at least three times since they left Lu Han back in Seoul. Minseok figures that Lu Han would be proud in some twisted sort of way to see that Yixing is carrying on so earnestly in his place, and wonders if maybe Yixing had been right rather than misguided about Lu Han's true intentions earlier.

At least he's given up for now, more intent on jostling the locked doors of the bus.

"How did this even happen?" Minseok asks with a remarkable amount of calm in his voice. Yixing doesn't look too flustered either as he continues fiddling with the creaky hinges.

Yixing pauses, tilting his head up towards the roof of the bus as he processes through the day's events. "I think we both just fell asleep?" he finally concludes with an vague shrug.

Getting trapped in a locked bus parked at the bus depot of a city they don't even know the name of should be a more daunting experience, but between the two of them it's actually rather uneventful. Yixing gives up on the doors after an hour and Minseok at least packed a few snacks and they spend the night blowing on the dirty glass windows and drawing with their fingertips. It's the most fun Minseok's had with Yixing since they first met.

So when Minseok wakes up the next morning being spooned by Yixing in the long backseat of the bus, their jackets draped over the two of them and Yixing's face buried in his hair, he doesn't complain because all-in-all there was nothing much to complain about, really. Not even Yixing's fingers resting on his hipbones.

Xiumin x Lay - I would rather you told me than attempted it and failed.

"Yixing, I am disappointed. I gave you one week and what do you come back with?"

Yixing turns away from Lu Han's disgruntled face and glances over at where the others are welcoming back Minseok, clapping him on the back and pulling him into welcoming hugs. It looks fun. He kind of wishes he was over there instead of being interrogated by Lu Han, no matter how glad he is to see his best friend again.

"Happy memories," he guesses, because it's true. He and Minseok didn't quite scale the mountains of South Korea -- Lu Han hadn't given them enough money or time for that -- but they did manage to find their way to one of the beaches and get matching suntans and seashells. It'd been nice, just the two of them wading into the water and digging their toes into the sand.

Lu Han shoots him an affronted look. "Did you even try? His cheeks were right there."

And yeah, Yixing guesses they were. They were round and soft to the touch even when they got sunburnt a little because Minseok hadn't thought to apply sunscreen there. "Of course I tried," he tells Lu Han, "they were very nice cheeks. I don't know why you bother with his face when you could go for them instead."

That seems to have been the answer Lu Han was looking for, if the way he doesn't speak for the rest of the night is any indication.

Prompts: First two were taken from here. Last one was taken from here.
A/N: This is actually a series of drabbles written for different prompts rather than an actual fic. They were all written for one-sentence challenges on EM, but I kinda went nuts and wrote full-on scenes. I decided to post these in their own entry instead of including them with my OSF:June post because they're technically not one-liners and there's some continuity? Anyway, the pairing was chosen by a prompt generator lol, otherwise I would never attempt writing Yixing. He's far too difficult for me to pin down lol. Anyway, it was fun. I miss writing connected drabbles. I also love making Lu Han a little creepy and miserable.
avirjin: (Default)
Another long break from writing anything on EM lol although I guess it's because it's less of a fic meme these days, which makes me sad :( Nonetheless, I was happy to see that someone decided to run another one-sentence challenge! It's been about two months (18 parts!!) since one of these, I've missed them. I mean, Exo's even come back in the time it's taken meme to get back to these lol

Unfortunately, I was sleeping when it happened so I didn't post any of my fills onto meme even though I still tried them out because I was so terribly late u__u Anyway, I still feel iffy about my characterization, in addition to my writing, so it wasn't a huge loss? It's been so long since I wrote anything... I miss it.

ETA - 06/14: EM had another challenge lol I'm surprised it happened so quickly. And someone said we're doing another tomorrow?! Ah... lol

ETA - 06/16: I missed yesterday's, but it was a SHINeexo challenge anyway lol. Although I guess it would have been nice to write for my old fandom again. Honestly, I didn't miss the timing for today, I just didn't have the confidence to post it. Oh well. I have a final to by studying for anyway. I don't think I'm going to do particularly well, especially if I'm wasting my time on one-liners, but I just need to get a 67 to get a C in the class. Low-ballin' it lol, I'm just so burnt out.

ETA - 06/17: I also wrote three Xiulay today, but I posted that separately since it was a series of connected drabbles and they weren't one-liners anyway. Maybe that's why I had trouble getting the last one done today. But surprise! I managed to write about all twelve members at least once, I'm rather surprised. (On a more negative note, I'm pretty sure I failed my final. At least I can write my frustrations out.)

ETA - 06/20: The challenge was really an iTunes shuffle one today, but since my iTunes library's been... well it's not pretty and it hasn't been since 2010, lol. But given the state of things, I just went for the typical one-liners prompted by the generators. Only two today though because one of the prompts was bulimia, and even though I swore I'd stick to whatever prompts I'd get, I had to break that promise for that one. Smh.

ETA - 06/22: The challenge was girl!exo one-liners. It was interesting, and a little pornier than I was honestly planning? But not too much, I'm still a novice in the grand scheme of things. Anyway, today's fills were really supposed to be for yesterday's challenge, but I didn't finish until the day had already passed.

ETA - 06/26: Honestly, these were the responses for 06/23, but I've been really slow bt-ing so I missed the challenge by a long-shot lol. Still managed to post one though, but it was on 06/24, which will have its own responses.

ETA - 06/27: These were meant to be for the 06/24 challenge. Obviously I missed it, but once again, I finished them anyway. Now I can focus on finding a birthday present for my friend lol. Oh, also of note, I broke 2k! What a surprise. Honestly, I probably broke it earlier if I included the xiulay, but I'm not so lol

Kris x D.O - Trivial Pursuit

It's stupid to think that a few stretches every morning will actually make him grow taller -- if that were really the case, he wouldn't be in this predicament in the first place -- but even harsh reality doesn't keep Kyungsoo from reaching for his toes and contorting his body each morning in ways only Jongin or Zitao are really capable of, and it doesn't keep him from dreaming of meeting Kris's lips one day without a bruised ego and three pairs of insoles.

Sehun / Tao - Disney princesses

"My hero," Sehun says, his voice neutral enough that Zitao can't make out his typical earnestness as he pulls Sehun by the wrist away from the mob of screaming fans -- but when Zitao finally turns to look at him, to tell him it wasn't a big deal or that he would have done it for any one of the others, the sheer tenderness in Sehun's smile and crinkled eyes stops in him in tracks and snatches the breath straight out of his chest.

(a/n: This is referring to the June 3rd trip to Changsha Airport where the place was so crowded and chaotic because of the fans that people were getting hurt. Apparently Tao went back to help Sehun, so there's a silver lining to every horror story I guess. Anyway, this is a loose interpretation of the prompt, but anons on EM had been referring to Sehun as Tao's chinaboo princess so a damsel in distress situation seemed right.)

Sehun / Tao - pre-debut vids

"You accidentally recorded," Zitao informs him in stumbling Korean after they've been standing in the same intimately close poses for over a minute waiting for the flash to go off, but Sehun decides then and there to make the most of an awkward situation by slipping his free hand into Zitao's jeans as the cellphone camera's red light continues blinking at them.

(a/n: This is referring to this predebut picture. Sehun's hand placement is so questionable ;3 On a funny note, Taohun's been so popular lately, I'm a bit surprised.)

Kris / Kai - have we met before?

Yifan remembers how small and timid Jongin had seemed years before either of them expected to debut as he danced around the hallways of SM with graceful, light-footed steps that Yifan couldn't help but envy; but years later as they stand together on stage, he wonders where this new Jongin -- the one with a strut in his step, a sultry look in his eyes as his skin glistens from sweat under the stage lights -- came from, whether this Jongin had been there all along, hidden behind little Jongin's deep stares and shy smiles.

(a/n: Messing with the distinctions between the real person and the idol persona is always one of my favorite topics, but Boss told me that too many people rely on the stage names to make that distinction. I want to change from that, so I focused on the idea that Kai's idol persona is still a part of him, even if it's one that Kris doesn't recognize.)

Baekhyun / Lay - strip club

"Lighting is everything! The wrong angle could turn Lu Han into a gross old man instead of a fresh-faced rent boy no matter how well he's working that pole," Baekhyun insists as he fiddles with the dials on the control console, glancing over suspiciously as if he's not sure the club's new hire completely understands him; the sad thing is that Yixing knows all too well how right Baekhyun is because he's actually witnessed Lu Han in all of his hungover glory, dark circles and crow's feet exaggerated by poor morning lighting.

(a/n: Can be read as Layhan, but that doesn't necessarily mean it is lol. Also me poking fun at Lu Han's face just because I can \o/)

Chanyeol x Sehun - The Dreamer

Fourteen-year-old Oh Sehun is scrawny and little and stares at Chanyeol from a distance with these stupid, shy eye-smiles and his pink, wet tongue sticking out of his mouth in a way that makes Chanyeol wonder how much taller would Sehun have to grow before Chanyeol could get away with sucking on it without having to bend over quite so much.

(a/n: Simple enough, right? Chanyeol is dreaming of the day Sehun gets tall enough to kiss lol. Chanhun is actually one of my top OTPs at the moment, and more than anything I'd like a predebut fic about them because there are a few accounts of Chanyeol doting on Sehun or being weirdly possessive? lol anyway, Sehun joined SM when he was fourteen and Chanyeol joined when he was sixteen, but they were both brought in the same year. Fun facts lol)

Chen / Chen - keep your cool

Like everything else about joining SM, the news that Jongdae is going to debut comes too quickly -- he knows for a fact that some of the guys here have been training for years -- but as he stares into the mirror of the company bathroom he snuck into while his new manager wasn't looking, he takes a deep, calming breath and finds his reflection smiling back at him reassuringly.

(a/n: Set predebut when Chen was told he'd be a member of Exo. He doesn't strike me as the overly confident type when he's alone, for all of his snark and bravado, but as someone who will still carry through and wouldn't let himself get psyched out quite so easily :3 )

Sehun should really know better when Zitao holds open the door to the restaurant for her and offers nothing more than a mischievous smirk, but her breath still hitches sharply as Zitao's long fingers graze the bottom of her skirt, freshly manicured nails trailing along the sensitive skin of her upper thigh.

(a/n: The only one I actually posted on meme because I was late, once again lol. Rather than being from a prompt generator, it was a request for girl!Taohun. I wonder if I should have used girl names, but the only difference would have been probably Sehun to Seyeon tbqh.)

Kai / Xiumin - fortune-telling

Lu Han is the one who comes up with the idea of using fortune ladders to allot roommate assignments during one of their overseas trips, but as Minseok follows the inked trails down, it's Jongin's name -- nice, quiet Jongin who sleeps like a log and doesn't wake up at ungodly hours of the night to start pillow fights or pinch his cheeks -- he finds at the other end of the line marked with his own name.

(a/n: This is a fortune ladder, although they're usually read vertically rather than horizontally. Each end of the other ladders would have been labeled with another member's name. Because you make it on your own, it's usually one-of-a-kinda and pretty random. It can be used for decision-making as well as fortunes.)

Kai / Xiumin - heroic deeds

Minseok pulls Jongin aside after one of their dance lessons because whatever the other trainees are planning for the top candidate for the position of SM's next golden boy is most likely going to be petty and immature; while the rest of them may be children, Minseok -- despite his tiny stature and his rather inconspicuous presence -- is a grown man and like hell is he going to let this happen under his watch.

(a/n: I wanted to write about Xiumin as the adult he is. It's something I feel like people tend to forget just because of his face. Once again, Kai is a passive presence :( 66th exo ship lol But yeah, here, Xiumin is less of a hero and more of a mature adult, but that's still something to be proud of :3)

Suho x Tao - dying will

"Another one from China," someone whispers into Junmyeon's ear, voice dripping with condescension as they watch one of the new guys introduce himself -- but rather than his dark eyes or heavy accent, Junmyeon notices the strong set of the kid's jaw and the overflowing confidence in the kid's stance and remembers a time when he used to be able to recognize those qualities in himself.

(a/n: Rather than going for the typical character death route, I decided to interpret "dying will" as more like "fading determination"? Suho has been training for years and he keeps seeing all of these new kids strutting in and Tao just happens to be the most recent. And he doesn't know when or how he lost that... spark that newer trainees like Tao walked in with.)

06/17/13 responses:

Chen / Luhan - gay vampires

It's a pity that Jongdae's pretty skin is fang-shatteringly difficult to pierce, and even moreso that his cold blood is stale compared to the fresh tang of actual human blood -- but he lets out these delicious little moans that have Lu Han nibbling his neck anyway, hungry in a way that won't destroy Jongdae like all of his other nightly treats.

(a/n: They're both vampires. That's it.)

Chen / Luhan - volunteering

Lu Han gets picked for the dance-off of course -- the program is being recorded in Beijing and the MCs are obsessed with showing him off like some sort of hometown hero -- but it's both surprising yet, in retrospect, expected when Jongdae's arm shoots up like a rocket after the MCs ask for one of the others to go up against him, all too eager to soak in the limelight.

Suho x Kai - Raspberries

It's only after their youngest have been given their obligatory coming-of-age presents that Junmyeon whips out a bottle of expensive bokbunja that shines a deep ruby red under the living room lights, pouring each of them a glass with experienced fingers and watching them down it with excited giggles, all while pretending he doesn't notice the way the wine's rich red color stains Jongin's lips.

(a/n: Kyungsoo, Tao, Kai, and Sehun came of age this May. Bokbunja is Korean raspberry wine that's supposedly it's naturally sweet, but not too alcoholic so it seems like a good choice for celebrating the coming-of-age of the younger members. It may also improve libidos ohohoho.)

06/20/13 responses:

Luhan / Sehun - wilted roses

Lu Han constantly, loudly reminds everyone he doesn't like people on his bed, but that doesn't stop Sehun from sitting down on it anyway so he can pull the blankets up over Lu Han's sleeping body -- Lu Han may be the hyung, but as Sehun looks down at how the faded red dye of Lu Han's hair draws out the pallor of his skin, he figures that hyungs deserve just as much care as maknaes sometimes.

(a/n: Lu Han is the wilted rose -- he's pretty and currently red-headed, but even he will start looking and feeling like... tired and shit because of life and time. Inspired by someone on EM saying that their head-canon was that Sehun's a functional adult, probably in response to how everyone makes him out to be this immature brat.)

Kai x Tao - Four Humors

"My grandmother would make this for me when I was growing up. Good for the body," Zitao announces as he switches out Jongin's water bottle for a thermos of tea smelling strongly of peaches and ginger, and when Jongin looks up at him -- tired and sore from a long day of rehearsals -- Zitao mimes drinking it and smiles when Jongin obediently copies him with an endearingly grumpy expression.

(a/n: Rather than delving into the Four Temperments associated with the Four Humors, I decided to focus on the underlying principle of it all: balance. We usually only hear about the excesses or deficiencies, but if you were healthy, it meant the four bodily fluids were balanced, making that balance the underlying goal. This balance was maintained by diet and activity. Sanguine calls for sweets, melancholic calls for fruits, choleric calls for fluids, and phlegmatic calls for ginger.)

Sehun x Xiumin - goodbye, my almost lover

Minseo is so tiny in Seyeon's arms as they hug each other good-bye that it's hard to remember that she's the unnie, although after EXO-M's plane to China takes off Seyeon can't imagine how she'd ever forget Minseo's quiet, strong, reassuring presence during the years they spent walking down the corridors of SM together, their hands mere centimeters apart but never quite touching.

(a/n: Xiumin and Sehun both joined SM in 2008, so they trained together for approximately four years. An interesting match with their age gap, and long enough for at least a sense of familiarity to build up.)

Baekhyun / Tao - commercial filming

Their first CF as twelve members is for some fizzy juice brand Baekhee finds too tangy to really enjoy, but then Zitao spills a can of it all over herself in-between takes and Baekhee spends the ten minutes the production staff gives them for clean-up with Zitao's sticky fingers in her mouth, savoring the sweet taste as she sucks each digit clean and Zitao dirties her free hand under Baekhee's mini-skirt, rubbing her thumb against Baekhee's clit and curling her fingers in Baekhee’s pussy until Baekhee comes all over her with a muffled moan.

(a/n: The Zitao I'm using here is 紫涛 rather than 子韜. I'm not sure if that's correct, but a friend told me that it was the prettier option and raised no objections. Google says it means 'purple wave' which is nice enough in my opinion. :3 I wanted to describe Tao's fingers but I couldn't do it, but at least I managed girl smut for the first time? Kinda.)

Baekhyun / Tao - karaoke room

The best thing about all of their maknaes now being of drinking age is that when they celebrate their comeback, there's no excuse why everyone can't get ridiculously drunk at one of SM's high security noraebangs -- so drunk that all Baekhee has to do is sit back and enjoy the show, pretending that her panties aren't already soaking wet from watching Zitao alternate between obnoxiously grinding up against Chanmi and shamelessly making-out with Minseo.

(a/n: Inspired by EXO's appearance on Yoo Inna's radio show.)

D.O / Baekhyun - panic

"You didn't see anything," Baekhee sternly tells Kyungri, scooting away from Chanmi's drawer of padded bras and concealing the bottle of itching powder behind her back; she can't be sure Kyungri with her unfairly huge eyes noticed the latest shot fired in the cold war between Baekhee and Chanmi, but that doesn't stop the guilty flush in Baekhee's cheeks or the adrenaline pumping through her veins.

(a/n: Making fun of the sinking of baekyeol lol. Sadly, Kyungri is just a body with a name because I don't know how to characterize D.O for shit yet. Soon.)

06/25/13 responses:

Lay / Kai - hold up

One night over a table of mouth-watering and distracting samgyeosal, the managers suggest that the group holds a 'friendly' vote for the top two dancers and, of course, Jongin and Yixing win by a landslide in spite of Jongdae's best efforts; however, that just means they're the ones forced to help demo the new choreography for Wolf the next morning, their death-grips on each other's wrists the only thing keeping them from toppling over on one side or another as they sway like a very pitiful tree and the others stare in muted horror.

(a/n: The joke is that Kai and Lay are holding each other up during the choreo. lol I don't know if they're partnered in the actual choreography, but I figured that if it's just practice then it wouldn't be a huge deal since temporary. Also, the managers were plotting this lol. Samgyeosal is grilled pork belly btw.)

Tao / Xiumin - stuck-up model

Physically, the newest Chinese trainee is a lot like Yifan in that he looks like the type of guy who'd be more suited for the catwalk -- tall as a skyscraper with his chin high and his shoulders straight -- but Minseok doesn't realize how right he is when, just like Yifan, the new guy's eyes meet his and he's greeted with a Cheshire Cat smile rather than the snub he'd been expecting.

The fact that Zitao speaks informally to him doesn't bother Minseok as much as it would if it were anyone else because it's due more to Zitao's nonproficiency with the language than automatically assuming, like so many people, that Minseok was younger -- which is exactly why Minseok takes to correcting Zitao with a gentle, encouraging smile rather than a scolding over manners.

(a/n: Based off of two interviews, one in which Xiumin mentioned that one of his problems in life was people speaking informally to him because of his baby face and another one in which it was mentioned that Xiumin made sure to correct Tao's speech so that he was speaking formally rather than informally, which is normally seen as impolite.)

Luhan x Kai - Shell

The first year Lu Han trains at SM, he honestly sees neither hair nor hide of Jongin due to the impenetrable circle of veteran trainees flocking around the younger boy; unsurprisingly, it takes several months of dance classes together and the official announcement of the group line-up for Jongin to seek out Lu Han first, flinching a little when the door of the practice room slams too loudly behind him, but still approaching Lu Han with rather determined eyes for someone so obviously skittish.

(a/n: Kai coming out of his shell both literally and figuratively lol /rimshot)

06/27/13 responses:

Baekhyun / Luhan - thief

The two of them don't work together often if only because it feels like overkill on the off-chance that they are partnered up; between Baekhyun bending light around them like an invisibility cloak and Lu Han's ability to lift ridiculously valuable trinkets from their pretty, little pedestals without raising a finger, all the fun gets taken out of the very act of burglary and the whole thing starts to feel like an actual job rather than the petty dalliances of bored meta-humans.

Baekhyun / Luhan - it can't be removed like a tattoo

"Does the pain ever go away?" Baekhyun asks despondently as they watch yet another media outlet speculate about SNSD's slow, messy disbandment due to conflicting interests between the girls and complaints against apparent company favoritism, and while Lu Han wishes he could answer that time heals all wounds, he still can't face his Mirotic-era poster of DBSK and not sigh over better times and his still-broken heart.

(a/n: Set in the future. Fans can get emotionally scarred for life because of disbandments, just saying u__u, This may or may not be based on reality lol)

D.O / Lay - ordinary

"That's pretty special, that you were already famous in China before all of this," Kyungsoo tells him while they're washing dishes together one night after Lu Han pulls out online clips of Yixing's child star days, but Yixing honestly doesn't feel special at all and hasn't felt so since the last time he performed on a stage for an audience screaming his name, rather than merely blending into a faceless crowd with nothing to show for years besides a heavy heart and his chest filled with longing as he watches others race towards the stars.

(a/n: Surprisingly, this is something meaningful despite the fact that these two are lowest tiered in my bias list lol. I think in general, Lay is very interesting and the years where he felt like he had nothing to show for the support he was still being given in-between his time as a child star and Exo's debut must have been... painful? Lack-luster? Ordinary lol /rimshot. I rag on him all the time for fun, but I can respect him a lot for holding onto his dreams for so long. Also inspired by this heehee.)

Summary: Everything in Zitao's life is constant... Everything?

Once during one of Zitao's lessons, he had read out the constant velocity of the Black Pearl from an electronic textbook in front of his whole class. It had been typed in tiny black pixels on an otherwise blank field of white almost as sterile as his bedroom walls and the ship's long, winding corridors, and the teacher's mechanical head had jerked at him once in both approval and dismissal as it continued on with the rest of the day's lesson in a smooth, synthesized voice.

Zitao had obediently sat down, and that had been the end of it.

Hurtling through space at hundreds of thousands of kilometers per second felt like something that should have been considered more thrilling than the rarely missed specks of dust that collected in the corners of the ship. Maybe it had been once upon a time, when Zitao's parents had first set foot on the Black Pearl with thousands of other passengers -- the survivors of a war that Zitao's electronic texts haven't covered yet no matter how far ahead he looks.

But there's no one else on the observation deck with him, not now anyway. Probably because there's nothing to observe that no one on the ship hasn't seen a thousand times before. Even Zitao is intimately familiar with the dark expanse of space just outside of the ship's windows, the little specks of twinkling lights in the distance that remain fixed in place as if someone had taken a white marker and merely dotted the glass. Sometimes he scratches at them with the blunt tip of his fingernail, but still they remain.

Constant like Zitao's short black hair.

Constant like Zitao's dull grey jumpsuit.

Constant like Zitao's empty white walls.

He breathes on the clean glass, disguising reality behind an uneven veil of faint white fog before pressing his fingertips against the window haphazardly. Peepholes into space stare back at him, a sky of his own making. It's pretty, Zitao thinks as he traces his own constellations.

It's while making thin paths with the tip of his fingernail that he notices them out of the corner of his eye: faint words that hadn't fogged over near the bottom of the observation window. The fog on the glass has already started to fade, making the characters harder to read, and so he takes a deep breath and blows again.

When the words reappear, thick black strokes against a fog of off-white, he reads them aloud as if they, too, were from one of his texts.

"Did those beautiful days I heard about really exist before?"

Prompt: 30-minute challenge from EM: Spaceships.
Author's Note: I did the 30 minute challenge over at EM, but I didn't post over there because I have "coward" written all over me lol. But anyway, this actually took me 40 minutes instead because I took the time to google about the appearance of stars in a moving spaceship and to actually blow on the glass of my window to see how it would look. I don't think I will elaborate too much on what this all means, because it should actually be part of an
AU that I used to write about. BTW, spoilers if anyone clicks on that -- you'll know the direction I'm planning on going with this (if I bother to continue) if you read through the first entry in that tag lol. A return to this verse after three years... some things do come back full circle, I suppose.

Last notes I suppose: I'm not sure if I even came close to capturing Tao's personality in this. My main point was to show his discontent, and a bit of his... not dreaminess, but thoughtfulness? Since there aren't any beaches to walk on alone, instead he sits alone on the observation deck and makes his own night sky against the glass. And the words he reads come from MAMA. How fitting, in the grand scheme of things.

ETA: I cross-posted, but far enough back that no one should notice other than back-trackers and flat-viewers. I'm still a coward, but I've missed posting on meme.

It's been a while since EM held one of these, huh? But it was fun even though I was kinda late and didn't write as much as I have for the other times. I should probably get back to writing more, but I'm at that point where I'm seriously questioning my characterization in addition to my skills. It's disheartening, but it felt nice to even get out two sentences, I suppose.

The only good thing about the outfit the coordi-noona had thrown in Kris's general direction the night before was that there were now even more DSLR lenses focused on the resulting fashion nightmare than on Jongin; his acne-ridden skin thanks Kris for the sacrifice and the lack of painfully embarrassing, high quality close-ups.

(a/n: This is referring to Kris's atrocity of an outfit during a flight to China and the many close-ups of Kai's really bad skin which I will not be linking to because it makes me sad lol)

"Don't let this kid fool you," Chanyeol tells Sehun's pretty little study date, who's watching from across the table as he rests his chin on the top of Sehun's head and wraps his arms possessively around Sehun's slender neck, "this is probably the first time he's cracked open a textbook, let alone set foot in the library. You should look into finding a partner who's more than just a pretty face."

(a/n: Predebut Seyeol makes me weak at the knees because of how possessive Chanyeol seemed lol. Also, boys calling other boys dumb. That's something I like :3)

For April Fool's Day, EM became Infinite Meme for a few hours lol. It was pretty fun, and someone started up a one-sentence exoinfinite challenge. I... didn't stick to one sentence for either of my responses because I completely missed the "one sentence" part... lol but it was fun! I wish I knew more about Infinite's characterization though, that definitely would have helped. Also, I typed in lapslock so I wouldn't be caught, heehee.

Gosh though, I really need to get back to writing. I've been drabbling on EM's YWOT with Boss though, which has been fun :) Also, I need to get to those seouldout crits lol, I've been procrastinating orz

Kai/Sungyeol

"wow, he looks cooler than you," woohyun laughs as they watch one of the new guys teleport from one side of the room to the other. wisps of smoke accompany him -- this kai kid they've been hearing whispers about for the past couple of weeks -- and sungyeol tries not to think about how he can only travel in short, comparatively weaker spurts. it had never been a problem before.

"whatever," he grumbles, shoving woohyun away. as he flickers out of the room, he misses the curious stare that lingers long after he's left.

(a/n: This is based off of the fact that both Kai and Sungyeol displayed teleportation powers in their debut MVs. Interesting coincidence. I actually requested this to be written when Seoulfulness first opened up and got two fills from some very nice writers, but it was nice writing a snippet myself! :3)

Chinguline/L

"we've been looking for new recruits ever since we lost jino," baekhyun tells myungsoo amiably, sitting him down in the last free spot in the chinguline circle.

myungsoo vaguely remembers jino from his debut year. he's not sure what happened to him over the years, but seeing the overenthusiastic smile chanyeol is shooting at him and feeling kyungsoo's wide-eyed stare piercing the side of his head makes him think that maybe he doesn't want to know.

"chingu-five?" jongdae offers, holding up all five fingers. his grin seems a little dangerous, but myungsoo high-fives him anyway.

chingus are nice. right?

(a/n: This is set in paca's "evil chinguline" au where Exo's 92-line -- Baekhyun, Chanyeol, Chen, and D.O -- are out to sabotage everyone who isn't them. Long story short, they took out Jino in order to debut and the implication here is that they're going after Infinite through L, who is also a 92-er. For the record, chingu refers to "same-age friends" or people born in the same year. They tend to be naturally close because there's no hyung/dongsaeng division that would necessitate actual formality in their interactions. Yeah. Bad life decisions, L.)

Summary: Junmyeon visits Sehun's friend in the hospital and gets more than he expects after years of bitter kisses and loneliness. Hollow Fusion!AU.

Junmyeon kisses two strangers before breakfast and Sehun over his morning coffee. Sehun's lips are always warmer than anyone else's, even when leaving his own that much cooler -- but never quite enough to chase away the memory of a real spark, of another pair that've been seven years gone. He's long since acquainted himself with this familiar bitterness, but that doesn't stop him from trying to wash away the taste of Sehun's lips with copious amounts of coffee.

"I'm insulted, hyung," Sehun deadpans as he pulls back into a pair of patiently waiting arms, missing how Youngho rolls his eyes.

"If anyone should be insulted, it should be Youngho," Junmyeon laughs as he watches them. He pours another packet of sweetener into his mug, stirring until every last granule dissolves. "People don't typically take well to their partners kissing others."

Youngho smiles, lips drawn tight. Junmyeon understands all too well, recognizes the insincerity when Youngho jokes, "You should just take Sehun hyung off my hands." His arm tightens around Sehun's shoulders and Junmyeon aches. His own shoulders sag under the phantom weight of a boy with lanky limbs and horrible morning breath, pressing down and kissing him underneath doorways until Junmyeon barely had the energy to stand, let alone kiss back.

He takes another sip of his coffee. It still isn't sweet enough, but he smiles anyway.

Hospital visits are routine for Junmyeon, who drops by multiple times a day to help out with lethargic patients in-between his shifts at the neighboring research facility. Zitao once called him 'kind', Jongdae fondly adding 'saintly'. It's nothing like that though; all Junmyeon does is graze some stranger's lips with his own, praying there aren't side effects.

"Junmyeon," the receptionist greets when he follows Sehun into the lobby, a proxy while Youngho's in class. She looks surprised -- probably is surprised -- to see him. He'd dropped by two hours prior and usually didn't have enough energy to make it back for another three, feeling sick and stiff with unreleased tension.

"I'm just here as a visitor," he assures her. Sehun holds up a gaudy get-well card, sprinkling glitter everywhere. Junmyeon had offered to buy a professional one, but Sehun had laughed in his face and spent the money on snacks instead.

Junmyeon doesn't know the story of the guy they're visiting, barely recognizes his name from Sehun's ramblings. People end up here for several reasons, some Junmyeon is more familiar with than others.

Sometimes, it's easier not to know.

"I'll stand out here," he says once outside the door. He spends enough time in these rooms already, still recalls the prickle of starched bedsheets against his fingertips, more tangible than the feeling of loss. The sterility of the hallway is more to his tastes, despite the chill. "I don't even know him."

"Jongin's the shy one, not you, hyung," Sehun laughs, eyes crinkled. He tugs Junmyeon's wrist with all the energy he'd swiped from him earlier and storms into the room. "Jongin! What's u--uh."

The boy leaning over the bed jerks away, as startled as Sehun's bedridden friend. They look embarrassed, the way they're both shrinking into themselves with twin expressions of shock. Junmyeon can't blame either of them really -- it's happened to him several times.

"Kyungsoo," he calls out, recognizing his fellow volunteer, "sorry for interrupting."

Kyungsoo coughs into his hand, an awkward chuckle slipping out. "It's fine, Junmyeon hyung. Jongin and I weren't as compatible as the doctors hoped anyway." Jongin looks down at his sheets miserably, still flustered, much to Sehun's amusement.

"Always said Jongin was too picky," Sehun laughs, "I don't know how Moongyu hyung put up with him for so long."

Another name Junmyeon doesn't remember, but it's not hard to connect the dots. "Your partner?"

"Not anymore."

Junmyeon recognizes that tone. The slump of Jongin's shoulders, the hurt on his face. Most patients wind up here because of temporary separations from their partners, whether out of necessity like business trips or due to petty arguments, stubborn pride. This is not the case.

This is more like his case.

"How about letting me try then?" he finds himself saying. He grabs the clipboard at the foot of Jongin's bed, flipping through the pages to find Jongin's particular wavelengh. He finds a series of graphs and spikes suggesting Jongin's an extremely fastidious receiver. "Sehun wasn't kidding about you being picky, but my energy's pretty indiscriminate. It's worth a shot?"

Jongin looks mutinous at the suggestion, folding into himself.

"Hyung's right," Kyungsoo says, "He's a pretty compatible guy. It could work." There's a gleam in his eyes as he glances between them. He then proceeds to drag Sehun out, catching Junmyeon's eye once more before shutting the door.

"We don't have to do this," Junmyeon immediately offers, meaning it. Rejection's routine, practically tasteless nowadays -- yet his heart pounds when Jongin bites his lip, deliberating.

"But you think it'll help." More than defeated, Jongin sounds cautious. He exhales and closes his eyes. "Fine."

He tenses, barely flinching as Junmyeon settles on the bed and cups his cheek. It's not until Junmyeon's close enough to kiss him that Jongin shudders, his lips parted as Junmyeon presses down feather-light -- the bare minimum for transferring energy.

But there's more. A spark that doesn't come just from the transfer.

A hand grasps his sleeve, tightening as Jongin kisses back with sweet lips. Junmyeon doesn't resist his pull, doesn't break away until Jongin's moan cuts through the haze because for the first time since Cho Kyuhyun had kissed him good-bye years ago, bitterness doesn't linger on his lips, in his heart. He'd almost forgotten the taste of anything else.

He wants seconds.

"Does this mean I can't kiss hyung anymore?" Sehun asks sullenly from outside. The smack of Kyungsoo's hand against his arm echoes, but all Junmyeon registers is Jongin pressing thin fingers against his lips and the familiar, unparalleled warmth of belonging to someone again pulsing in his own.

Prompt: Exoplosion Challenge #2: Awkward
Author's Note: First and foremost, I COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY FAILED THIS CHALLENGE because it was due on 2/2 and it is currently 2/10. I am a failure, please throw stones at me. I was even almost tempted to break the word count, but my sense of duty and shame overrode that particular temptation. I am still deeply ashamed of myself.

Secondly, this is obviously an AU based off of the manga Hollow Fusion (Shinkuu Yuusetsu) in which the premise is that there are two types of people: suppliers and receivers. Suppliers create too much (life) energy within their own bodies after their toddler years whereas receivers do not make enough to sustain themselves. Possessing too much energy or too little is actually detrimental to one's health and could result in death, so people are paired up with partners according to the compatibility of their energy wavelengths so that a supplier may transfer their excess energy to a receiver. This is only possible through kissing. Most people have pretty specific wavelengths, so kissing someone who isn't specifically synced to them can taste from funny to downright nasty. Also, partners =/= lovers, although it's likely for the two to overlap. Since it's a matter of life-or-death, partners are actually valued more. Very rarely do people split from their partners.

Now that the background info's out of the way, I guess I should point out that the suppliers are Suho, Youngho, D.O, and Moongyu while the receivers are Sehun, Kai, and Kyuhyun. Suho was partnered with Kyuhyun until they separated years prior (Kyuhyun already found a new partner, Suho didn't), Sehun and Youngho are partners, Kai and Moongyu were partners until something happened to Moongyu, and D.O still has his own partner (heehee). He just likes volunteering his energy. Suho survives without his partner by offering his own energy up to any receiver friends and patients he meets, which is possible because he is coincidentially very compatible with people and creates excessive energy even for a supplier. Sehun takes advantage of this in spite of having his own partner lol.

I know I never outright state the rules of this AU -- I tried to avoid using the terms "supplier" or "receiver". Instead, I tried my best to naturally weave in as I could about the universe. Basically anything about energy and lips and the taste of these things. The last thing I wanted to do was info-dump, especially with a word limit, so I decided to write based off of the idea that the characters themselves understand how their universe works so there'd be no point in spelling things out. It's a fact of life, like breathing and going to work.

Anyway, back to the story. Long story short, this is basically an analogy of Suho recovering from a break-up of sorts. I'll continue explaining when it's not stupid-o'clock in the morning again e___e For the moment though, it needs to be understood that every single word was pain-stakingly chosen. Except maybe the bratty Sehun parts, those were an indulgence.

ETA: Okay, I'm more awake now e_e so since I covered all of the au background info, I guess now I can focus on the story itself and how it fills the prompt.

The first section is really a set-up so that Suho's feelings can be acknowledged, in addition adding the parallel of Sehun's kiss to be later compared with Kai's. Suho himself has a parallel in Youngho (who, if anyone doesn't know, is an 95-er SM trainee who was rumored to be close with Sehun) because he's already gone through losing his partner, so he understands Youngho's paranoia about losing Sehun. The whole "people don't typically take well to their partners kissing others" applies to both of them. So basically, Suho knows those feels lmao. The line is also important because, regrettably, I couldn't fit in any other aspects of Suho's jokester personality in. :( Hopefully if I continue this AU in snippets, I can go for it since Suho will be much happier in them.

Anyway, as for all of the coffee and taste imagery, I thought since this was an AU in which kissing is so important (like, Sehun is breaking major taboos by kissing someone who isn't his partner, but people let him have his way), it'd be important to focus on the sensation of taste. Unfortunately I don't actually drink coffee so my knowledge is lacking lmao. But the theme was that Suho, for all of his kind words and gentle smiles and obliging ways, is actually still very bitter about his experiences and that as a coping mechanism, he's spent the past few years trying to drown himself in other things (especially helping other people, as seen later) in hopes of getting his mind off of it. Sehun's lips don't match up to Kyuhyun's, he has to watch partners all around him every day and pretend that it still doesn't hurt that not only does he no longer have a partner, but that his partner willingly split up from him. That's what makes this awkward, not just Suho kissing someone else's partner in front of them, but having to watch two people who are compatible with each other in every way be happy together in front of him. Like he's a third wheel. It's a bitterness that can't be easily washed away, either by time or how many sugar packets he puts in his coffee. Even the stirring motion's a bit symbolic in that it represents the small actions Suho has to take in order to accept how things are.

Also, the phantom boy is Kyuhyun who was kinda greedy and used to kiss all of the energy out of Suho. Not that Suho minded at the time anyway.

So. Hospital visit. Here's the reveal of how Suho manages to cope without a partner -- by throwing himself into volunteering up his lips and energy to complete strangers which I guess could be compared to one-night stands if it weren't a life-or-death situation lmao. In Hollow Fusion, if partners get separated for any reason, they tend to volunteer if possible in order to prevent a real deficit or excess of energy from building up and fucking them over. It has to be with someone compatible enough though, otherwise it can lead to the energy not transferring properly or people getting sick on each other. Suho's compatibility's a bit of a miracle because all he has to deal with is the taste of bitterness, so he throws himself into this multiple times a day. Sad, but helpful. The story explicitly goes on to note that this doesn't make him a martyr or an angel though, no matter what others say. He needs it just as much as the patients do. It's not something he wants to do, but something he has to.

There should also be elements of trauma? Like Suho is so intimately familiar with this hospital not just because of his volunteer work, but because he probably spent some time here after Kyuhyun left. He's so familiar with it and eager to get away that he would rather distance himself and stand in the cold hallway (when he canonically hates the cold) instead of having to face yet another person who's been separated from their partner long enough for an energy deficit to occur. Especially when instead of it being a stranger, it's someone who Sehun wants him to put an actual name and face to.

Then there's awkward interruption of D.O trying to supply Kai with energy, although they're not compatible enough because sorry Kaisoo lmao. If anything they're like Suho and his various pseudo-receivers in that they can pass enough energy between them for a little while, but it's not as pleasant as actually having a partner who's synced with you. The reason D.O's there is because he's a bit of a nurturing type even irl, but he does have his own partner -- BTOB's Hyunsik lol. Yum. Ahem. Then there's insensitive Sehun bringing up Moongyu (a former SM trainee, Taemin and Kai's rl bff) who for some reason or another can no longer supply Kai with energy. He's still alive, but the important thing is that because he can no longer be partnered with Kai, Kai feels abandoned and kinda angry. This actually makes Sehun's "get-well" card both a little more callous but appropriate because as in the case of Suho, how do you "get well soon" from really losing your partner? But it'd be a downright insult to get a professional, detached card. It's a dumb way of showing Sehun cares about Kai. But in the end, even he can't understand, not like Suho can seeing as he's lived through it.

It's that empathy that allows Suho to offer his services, but just as easily offer a rejection of those services because he knows it's not an easy decision, especially when Kai is still in the early stages of loss. He'd like to help because he can identify with Kai so easily and I guess that's foreshadowing their compatibility as partners. The "rejection's routine, practically tasteless" thing is just another coping mechanism though. Suho's been so numbed over by the bitterness, which is clarified in the "forgotten the taste of anything else" line. But it's that spark when Kai and Suho kiss that reawakens... something in him. Like when you take a bite of something delicious and realize just how hungry you were before, and how you just didn't realize it. Kai's... that bite. That's how the manga seemed to describe kissing anyway, I couldn't draw from personal experience because I've only kissed one guy and it was literal shit lol.

And then it ends with petulant Sehun being a brat and being the first to acknowledge that Suho and Kai could become actual partners because he just heard Kai moaning loud enough to be heard through the door. And that's awkward. Heehee. But what matters is that Kai felt the connection just as clearly as Suho did and it's supposed to be such a nice and relieving and perfect feeling and yeah. Stupid sappy stuff. Things aren't perfect -- they still have a lot of trauma to work through along with getting used to each other -- but both Suho and Kai are now on the road to recovery as losing something so important. Losing people who were so important. That recovery is important.

Anyway. For the prompt. Awkwardness, right. You'd think as an awkward person I'd be much better at writing awkward moments, but I can't stand them and I hated this prompt so I went for awkward moments. I listed a few here, but really everything is awkward, haha. And finally the title. It was actually pretty hard to pick a title, probably because my brain was dead from trying to finish this /o\ If I had posted it now, I would have titled it "Compatibility" or something. But this title does have some meaning. Firstly, it's a play off of the manga's name Hollow Fusion. Then there's the concept of "fission" -- things splitting, like what happened to Suho and Kai and their partners -- vs the concept of "fusion" -- things coming together like Suho and Kai will. And all the "steps in-between" part refers to how Suho's been living since his "fission". Yeah. Dumb of me.

And that's it. There's a whole verse I have for this and everyone in Exo has already been partnered up so maybe I'll write more drabbles for it? No promises though.

EM held another one-sentence challenge :) It was fun to write again. I'm glad the pairings and prompts were pretty manageable this time around :3 Funny how this one was started exactly one month after the first lol

Kris / Lay - panic

"It's okay, Duizhang," Yixing says after an hour of watching an increasingly agitated Kris flush water into his irritated eyeballs, which are still red from when they were accidentally assaulted with pepper spray earlier, "the rest of your face is still nice enough, and even if you go blind, it's not like you could dance any worse than you do now?"

(a/n: A continuation of of my last Kris/Lay one sentence fill. Does that count as cheating? lol)

The day Do Kyungsoo walks into one of SM Entertainment's practice rooms and warms up his pitch-perfect voice with the same exercises Junmyeon's been using since he first started vocal lessons years ago, Junmyeon sighs dreamily and feels his own voice catch in his throat as the temptation to sing along bubbles beneath it.

All it takes is the lightest of pushes disguised as yet another clumsy dance attempt for Jongin to land in the path of the incoming train amidst the shrieks of the other members -- granted, the worst damage a bunch of preschoolers in conductor's hats and cardboard boxes can do is bruise up Jongin's shin a little bit as they crash into him, but frankly, Jongdae is willing to take any advantage he can get if he's going to actually participate in a dance-off against a so-called dancing machine.

(a/n: I was actually going to kill Kai at first, but I couldn't handle it and went for crack instead lol)

Jongdae laughs, his lips curled up into a smirk and his hands cupped around his eyes like a pair of binoculars as he asks "How's the air up there?" to which Chanyeol replies by taking in a deep gulp of air, bending down, and blowing it all in Jongdae's face.

Title: Pavlovian
Fandom: Exo
Focus: Lu Han-centric, (one-sided) Lu Han/Xiumin
Genre: Romance, Gen
Rating: G
Length: Oneshot, 1000 words
Summary: Lu Han helps Xiumin with his Mandarin, for better or for worse.

Lu Han likes the way Korean sounds on his tongue, his voice carrying each syllable past his lips and into Minseok's ear. Hours of classes and years of practice have weathered away his accent, and the lack of mistakes nowadays has little to do with promoting in China. While Mandarin still slips out easily even after years away from what once was home -- as easily as sliding into place next to Minseok on-stage -- it's Korean he speaks behind closed doors, sings under his breath when the cameras aren't around.

But even under bright lights and the scrutiny of thousands of eyes, as the MCs chatter with the others and the audience roars appreciatively, Lu Han will place a hand on Minseok's shoulder and whisper Korean too low for anyone else to hear. Stray comments missed by the translator, exaggerated imitations of Yifan's scripted responses and Tao's sickeningly adorable ones, unprompted answers to questions Minseok doesn't even have time to convert into elementary Mandarin.

"Thank you," Minseok says each time, the phrase too simple for him to trip over but more than enough for Lu Han. He smiles widely at Lu Han, gums showing and teeth gleaming under the spotlight.

Sometimes, Lu Han is bold enough to grab Minseok's hand instead. Sometimes in addition to Minseok's smile, Lu Han is rewarded with the squeeze of small fingers, tightening around his heart. Minseok's hold is firm and strong in a way people probably don't expect from someone with such soft features, but Lu Han doesn't mind shackles like this.

"I didn't catch that," Minseok whispers behind his hand one day, an observation rather than a complaint. He laughs a beat too slow, his lips curled up into a confused smile, so Lu Han scoots over and eagerly explains the joke the MC made about Yixing's face. It's a pretty poor one and Lu Han doesn't properly insert the MC's trademark comedic pauses, but when it elicits a genuine laugh from Minseok, he knows it's worth it.

That's how it starts.

Languages only come easy to some people -- Lu Han simply has to look within his own group to confirm this, watching as Zitao and Jongdae take turns stumbling in each other's mother tongue while Yifan easily corrects one or the other with a fond smile on his face. Thus, Lu Han is happy to pick up where the translator and Minseok's understanding leave him lacking.

Initially, Lu Han only translates a word here or there, ones that Minseok couldn't have possibly picked up no matter how many lessons he's been assigned. Minseok's thanks is always satisfying in an understated sort of way, the crinkling of his eyes, a relieved sigh, the way he turns to Lu Han with unmistakable gratitude on his face.

It gets easier for Lu Han to read Minseok, how his shoulders tense when he can't keep up with the scripted banter or how his eyes dart from one side of the stage to the other to monitor the others' reactions. Yet very rarely will Minseok even glance at him despite standing side-by-side, no matter how ready Lu Han is to help.

"Feel free to ask anytime," Lu Han assures him backstage as they're getting fitted for their mics, throwing his arms around Minseok's neck from behind, "I don't want you feeling left out."

Minseok pats one of his arms, rolling his eyes. "I'm a big boy, Lu Han, I can take care of myself."

And he probably can -- Minseok's more capable than anyone gives him credit for -- but Lu Han likes how his eyes light up when Lu Han explains something to him in familiar Korean, that silly smile that spreads on his face. It's not a problem if Minseok's progress with Mandarin starts to slip, if his initiative happens to falter whenever Lu Han offers him easy comprehension on a silver platter.

It's not a problem.

Only it is, seeing as Yifan and Yixing corner Lu Han after he's spent one too many days coaxing Minseok out of Mandarin practice with Zitao. It had only been a matter of time; Minseok's workbook pages have been neglected for weeks now, his accent noticeably worse.

"I get it, okay?" Yifan says with all the self-assurance of someone who actually doesn't, "but you can't keep using Minseok as an excuse to practice your Korean when he's supposed to be learning Mandarin."

"It's not like that. I'm helping him," Lu Han tries to argue, his fists tightening at his sides in sync with his chest. He wants to punch Yifan.

Yifan's glare pierces straight through his words, both the truth and the lie. "You're hindering him. He's barely spoken ten complete sentences in Mandarin on the past three shows we've been on. Barely even tried. You think no one's noticed you whispering in his ear all of the time?"

Slender hands -- Yixing's, the traitor -- settle on Lu Han's shoulders, holding him back from further regrets.

"We're worried too, and we know you're just trying to help," Yixing reasons, his voice steady and even. Yet with every word, Lu Han feels his heart sinking heavily. "Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime, remember? This isn't fair to Minseok."

Even if they're right, even if Yixing's his best friend and Yifan's his leader, Lu Han can't stop. Won't stop.

"I don't know what I'd do without you," Minseok tells him, sitting so close that Lu Han can feel his warm breath. The last of a translation has just barely left Lu Han's lips when Minseok's hand reaches for his, giving it a small squeeze. He feels Yifan's disapproving stare directed at the back of his head, yet all he can think of is Minseok's gaze -- so tender that he could mistake it for more than mere gratefulness, can pretend it's something deeper.

Love.

Need.

Lu Han doesn't mind shackles like these, not when they suit Minseok so perfectly.

Prompt: Exoplosion Challenge #1: Guilty Pleasures
Author's Note: Submitted with about 5 minutes to my deadline lol Anyway, once again,  I am not an official participant of the Exoplosion drabble challenge, but I will be following the prompts and the deadlines as a writing exercise. It felt good to do something like this again.

I'll offer a commentary on this tomorrow when I'm not supposed to be sleeping. I just have to say I'm not completely pleased with it because I couldn't include everything I want to and my transitions were pretty bad. I need to keep to a smaller word count next time.

Okay, commentary time! It might get long because I... talk a lot orz. So let's start with the prompt! I actually really, really hated it because "guilty pleasures" is such a common phrase and there wasn't much for me to analyze? Not like Seouldout, which was pretty disappointing. I have higher hopes for the future of Exoplosion, but still. I originally came up with three ideas for this prompt: this one, a Baekyeol one where Baekhyun excuses his desire to watch Chanyeol with the excuse that Chanyeol worked with SNSD, and another one about Suho being masochistic. I asked around on twitter and decided to go step out of my comfort zone with this Xiuhan idea. It also helped that I've been talking about yanderes for the longest time with one of my friends.

So. In this story, Lu Han is supposed to be vaguely yandere-ish? It's supposed to be a little bit of a twist, because I initially set it up as Lu Han just finding joy in speaking in Korean and being able to translate for Xiumin all of the time -- but the truth of the matter is that that was all just the means to an end. What he really wanted was to cultivate some sort of dependence in Xiumin, where he would be forced to lean more and more on Xiumin. That part was inspired by talk on meme about how Xiumin doesn't seem to be trying with Mandarin that much because Lu Han keeps talking in Korean to him instead of forcing him to learn. Sink or swim, yeah? Everyone thinks Lu Han is spoiling Xiumin, but really Lu Han is spoiling himself which is ruining (?) Xiumin.

I originally wanted the imagery to be better in this -- that's a weak point of mine. I'm in ecology now and I really wanted to work in metaphors relating to commensalism vs parasitism in the form of ivy on a tree: ivy doesn't harm a tree by climbing on it, but if it starts weighing the tree down, it'll eventually kill it. Lu Han was gonna be the ivy/orchid (pretty and ambitious because it reaches so high, touchy, clingy, etc) while Xiumin was gonna be the tree (steady, strong). Unfortunately, I couldn't include this metaphor :( All that remains of it is the image of Lu Han clinging to Xiumin's back and Xiumin's hold being described as strong. Ah, regret is a strong thing lmao.

Speaking of regret, I wasn't sure if I managed to portray it very well here. It starts in the second section and continues to the end, so the reason Lu Han feels bad when Lay is speaking specifically is because he knows that what's being said is a lie -- none of it is really for Xiumin's benefit. Even when he's addressing Kris, I mention that he tells both a truth and a lie -- the problem isn't that he's a Koreaboo (the truth), but he isn't helping Xiumin like he says he is. And he knows that.

So the shackles now. They're mentioned twice -- the first time's a little innocent, but it's the second time that should raise some alarms about Lu Han's mindset, his possessiveness, how far that selfishness of his is willing to go. It matches the yandere idea I wanted to go with, haha, but they were something that evolved spontaneously. In case anyone doesn't know, a yandere is a person who appears cute, well-meaning, harmless, and pretty much normal on the surface but is actually obsessed with their love interest to the point of insanity. In the more extreme cases, it ends in bloodshed, haha, but here I just wanted to capture the more calculating, possessive side of it. After all, having someone become almost solely dependent on you in a foreign country where they can't really speak the language can be pretty empowering, which can be pretty addictive.

Which is why this story is called "Pavlovian", after the concept of Pavlovian conditioning (as I remember it /o\). After all, if I couldn't fit in my ecology crap in here, I might as well fit in my psychology stuff LMAO. But that's also connected to the shackles idea. The idea is that Xiumin is the one who accidentally sets this off. The first time Lu Han translates for him, he's so taken by Xiumin's positive reaction that he becomes... conditioned. Or Xiumin accidentally starts conditioning him. If Lu Han translates, Xiumin is grateful and makes Lu Han's heart ache in a good way. But it also means Xiumin puts less effort into learning Mandarin, which leads to a vicious cycle where he's asking for help, although Lu Han's skipped a step so that he preemptively translates things for Xiumin. So the first pair of shackles are the ones Xiumin accidentally stuck on Lu Han. The second pair's the result of that vicious cycle though, and is intentional on Lu Han's part.

So. Other than that, pretty straight-forward, ha. Honestly, reading back, there are words I would have cut off, words I would have added, sentences I would have reworded. But that's water under the bridge. My transitions were weak, so I'll have to work on that and I based the dynamics almost entirely off of Amy's Xiuhan meta, plus input from my own observations and Xiumin headcanon. Hm.

EM was having a one-sentence challenge using a random pairing/prompt generator :) It was fun. I only wrote two, but it felt nice to have something to post again. I guess I lucked out because I was given pairings that I've talked about with others before, even if they're not my top ships. Anyway, here's to the new year! :3

ETA - 01/08: EM had another challenge and I've decided to just put my new ones here :)

01/05/13 responses:

Baekhyun / Tao - otome boyfriends

Baekhyun taps a combination of buttons and picks a chocolate cake out his inventory, watching as Zitao's heart meter rises and his pixelated cheeks turn a lovely shade of red that complements the dark circles the game developers had designed him with.

(a/n: I had no clue what otome boyfriends were, so I figured I could make them otome game boyfriends -- pretty much a dating sim boyfriend lol)

Kris / Lay - pepper spray

"Oh, sorry," Yixing says, looking far more apologetic than his flat tone implies as he watches Kris flush out his irritated eyeballs in the dorm's bathroom, "Lu Han told me it was silly string -- happy birthday by the way."

01/08/13 responses:

Chanyeol / Kai - fatal

Slowly backing away, Chanyeol can feel the tightness in his throat and the twitching of one eye as he watches Jongin advance towards him with both a dark expression and a frighteningly large rock in his hands -- maybe nailing him in the face with eleven snowballs in a row had been overkill.

(a/n: Based off of the series of photos in which sekaiyeol had a snowball fight and Kai picked up a huge rock.)

Lu Han / Baekhyun - the sweetest gift

"It's the first SMTown album I got all of SNSD to sign, so treat it well," Baekhyun rambles as Lu Han stares down in confusion at the blue reindeer and the 2007 WINTER SMTOWN on the album cover; it looks identical to the copy he had scavenged for back when he first came to Seoul, at least until he picks out five instantly recognizable autographs from all of the others and faintly hears Baekhyun say, "it was also the last one I got DBSK to sign before the split -- Merry Christmas, hyung."

(a/n: Only Love was SNSD's first time participating in an SMTown album and the last official time DB5K participated. The 2009 release, in addition to being a little pathetic, broke out right when the split started iirc, so there would have been few to no chances to get all five members to sign it.)

Baekhyun / Lu Han - torture

"Think that I'd remember those eyes, eyes, eyes," Lu Han croons to Tiffany as Baekhyun glares enviously through the glass of the practice room's door, making eye contact just as Tiffany places a hand on his shoulder like the choreographer instructed and smiling mischievously when Baekhyun's eyes narrow.

(a/n: Based off of Lu Han's participation in the TTS/Exo collaboration "DJ Got Us Falling in Love" and Baekhyun's fanboying over SNSD.)

Title: Meticulosity
Fandom: Exo
Focus: Tao-centric, slight Kris/Tao
Genre: Gen
Rating: G
Length: Oneshot, 1000 words
Summary: Both Kris and Tao manage to care too much about things that shouldn't matter, but actually do.

When they had checked into the hotel that night, the beds had looked as soft and plush as any of the others Tao had become acquainted with. Big, fluffy pillows and soft, thick comforters -- he'd been all too eager to just bury himself in them and never emerge, regardless of their schedules. But when he flops down, arms spread in anticipation of sinking into the mattress, he finds himself disappointed.

Despite its deceptively cushiony appearance, his bed is surprisingly stiff. He feels a little like Goldilocks and tentatively wonders if he should test out Kris's.

Glancing at the closed bathroom door -- Kris had wasted no time in claiming it first, as if Tao would honestly challenge him for it -- Tao rolls over and stretches his leg across the space between their beds. Kicking the blankets aside, he bounces the heel of his foot down onto the surface once, twice, three times before deciding that a bed switch would be pointless.

"Duizhang," he calls out, careful to keep his voice low, "Duizhang, the beds suck."

Tao knows he shouldn't complain -- at least he's not stuck sleeping on a hardwood floor next to a flailing Chen again -- but that doesn't mean he has to like it. He kicks at Kris's bed as if it'll magically soften beneath the force of his blows, but no luck.

"Just go to sleep, Tao. Long day tomorrow."

Tao rolls his eyes, even if Kris isn't there to see him do it. "I'll sleep when you do."

There's a quiet scoff muffled by distance and a closed door, but no argument. Tao takes it as silent assent -- not quite as good as Kris's approval, but surely he's getting too old to be constantly seeking that.

The problem with waiting for Kris is that there's not much to do in their hotel room other than sleep. Tao doesn't dare raise his voice anymore, let alone practice his singing or language skills even if Kris is the least likely to tease him about it. There's no room for him to practice wushu or their new choreography either. He can already feel his eyelids drooping out of utter boredom.

Tao definitely doesn't want to sleep though, not before Kris does, not after what he just said.

"What are you doing in there anyway?" he asks after a few close calls. He reaches for his luggage and pulls out his laptop as he waits for Kris to answer. It takes just as long for his laptop to boot up.

"Getting ready for bed."

Tao frowns at the screen -- Kris's idea of getting ready for bed was far more elaborate than his own. There'd be no telling how long they'd be staying up tonight. "Just the three-step today?" he asks hopefully, trying to keep out any hints of childish petulance.

He looks up when he hears a click, just in time to see Kris poking his head out of the bathroom. His blond hair is tied up and his fingers are rubbing small, hypnotic circles into his skin. Tao's eyes linger seconds too long, but he can't help how Kris and his strict skincare routine fascinate him.

Kris takes a second to wiggle five foam-covered fingers at him, his eyebrows narrowed in concentration as he continues applying the product with his other hand. Tao stifles a impulsive groan and silently hopes that his leader is at least in the midst of using his toner -- and not just because it's the third step out of five. He knows from experience that it stings like a bitch, no matter how straight Kris's face stays.

With that, Kris returns to work. He doesn't bother shutting the door this time so Tao can see him hovering over the sink out of the corner of his eye, his profile as sharp and striking as ever as he splashes warm water on his face.

"Was that the toner?" Tao asks, turning back to his laptop. A slew of fantaken photos and videos from the group's latest outing have just been posted onto their Baidu Bar. He clicks on one in which his name is featured prominently, only to exit once an unflattering, unfiltered close-up of his pores load. Kris never has that problem he thinks glumly, clicking through other links.

"Exfoliant," Kris corrects. "It's important to scrub everything off."

Not everything needs to be scrubbed off in Tao's opinion, cleansed and toned and buffed until it shines like gold. There's no use telling that to Kris though, whose entire concept revolves around coming off as effortlessly flawless. There's a reason all of Kris's candids look like photoshoots and Tao's don't.

He continues searching through the site, his mouse hovering anxiously over certain links. Each click is a game of chance. The compliments may outweigh the insults tonight, but that doesn't keep the bitter sting of humiliation away every time he finds someone insulting his looks, his personality, his existence.

He doesn't even realize how long he keeps at it, not until a large hand closes his laptop for him. Obviously long enough for Kris to reach his last step: an overnight facial mask that whitens, tightens, cleanses. Creates an idol, an ideal.

"You shouldn't worry so much about what they say, Zitao."

Tao feels long fingers at the back of his neck, rubbing in those familiar, reassuring circles. He leans into the touch, tilting his head so he can look up at both of Kris's masks. Staring at Kris's mouth, he wonders whose words will come out -- the Kris he follows through airports or the one he first met back in Korea?

"You too, Duizhang."

Kris's lips barely twitch, a smile not worth ruining his mask. "That's different," he answers in his leader voice. So smooth, so sure, so authoritative. So wrong. But Tao can hear traces of Yifan in every pause, buried beneath sharp, shiny angles and fine details; he hopes Kris never manages to wear him away.

Prompt: Taken from seouldout's Round 6 Challenge Five/Final Challenge:
i give myself five days to forget you.
on the first day i rust.
on the second i wilt.
on the third day i sit with friends but i think about your tongue.
i clean my room on the fourth day. i clean my body on the fourth day.
i try to replace your scent on the fourth day.
the fifth day, i adorn myself like the mouth of an inmate.
a wedding singer dressed in borrowed gold.
the midas of cheap metal.
tinsel in the middle of summer.
crevice glitter, two days after the party.
i glow the way unwanted things do,
a neon sign that reads;
come, i still taste like someone else’s mouth.

- Warsan Shire,
Residue.

Author's Note: I will explain this story later, when it is not 2AM in the morning LOL. I was very liberal with the prompt though. Very, very liberal.

It is no longer 2AM so I will elaborate! Haha. Well, the truth is that I had a whole lot of trouble with this prompt for a whole lot of reasons. Firstly, the new word limit. Ughhh. Also, I'm sure it's pretty... noticeable by now, but I don't really write stories where people are actually together or have broken apart. I write implications, longing, hoping. Sometimes there's mutual interest, but I rarely write actual couples because I am horribly inexperienced in that area and I don't feel like I can handle anything more than a strong interest lol For a writer I'm not very imaginative.

So. Faced with a poem -- the fact that there was only one prompt rather than two to choose from was troublesome as well -- that was very straight-forward in its topic... really screwed me up. So I did my best to make my old English teacher proud and I analyzed the shit out of it, in hopes that I could take bits and pieces and assemble something relating to the theme without actually writing a straight-up romance/break-up.  Which is how I ended up with this.

What happens here is that Exo M books a hotel for the night and Tao and Kris room together as usual (or I think it's usual. They mentioned that roommate assignments get switched up when they stay in hotels). Kris does his infamous facial care regiment while Tao refuses to sleep and instead spends his time online looking at netizen comments. Kris tells him he shouldn't because Tao is easily upset by the negativity, and Tao thinks Kris should do the same. The question is how does this relate to a prompt about someone trying to forget their ex-lover and is intent on getting rid of all traces of them?

Ahem. So, I refocused the subject of the poem (the ex-lover) to mean the real Kris (Yifan, if you will) and basically internalized the shit out of everything. I like internal conflict and the dichotomy between who we are and who we're trying to be, if that isn't obvious. I should probably try to get new material. That dichotomy is pretty much played out long story short in the first few paragraphs about the beds -- they appear soft and perfect, but in reality they're stiff and uncomfortable and Tao cannot ignore that. Anyway. So what Tao is witnessing is Kris attempting to scrub away all traces of his old self, rather unsuccessfully, and polishing himself up. I got the idea for this part from reading lines 5-11, because it did remind me of the principles of a skin-care routine? An attempt at deconstruction followed by a superficial reconstruction.

I guess a huge influence was the
Kris meta on KFA from almost three months ago? About Kris's awkward stage presence and how he seems to handle himself like a person who wasn't always considered good-looking and had to work on that? I tried to make it so any self-consciousness on his part was more subtle than Tao's and would only show up towards the end as Tao was making comparisons between the two of them. There's a reason why the title is "Meticulosity" which means "taking extreme care of about minute details" and the original title was "Careful, Careless". It comes from the line about how Tao considers Kris's concept to be "coming off as effortlessly flawless" which is a joke. Because they're idols, they're all about hard work and training and being coached in controlling how they're seen and then there are all of these fans who praise Kris for looking like a model in the most mundane places, as if that's his natural state and he can't help how good-looking he is. When I guess my head-canon is that he works super hard at keeping up appearances. This ties into lines 8-11 of the poem, where there's all of this bright, attention-grabbing imagery that reflects the person's desire to... grab attention after they've been abandoned (lines 1, 2, and 12).

Again. I tried not to let this completely influence my characterization of Kris, who from Tao's POV would come off as grown-up and mature and something to aspire to. I will continue more on Tao later, I swear. lol Kris doesn't actually show any insecurity in this story other than what Tao thinks he hears in the little pauses Kris takes. And the reader just has to take his word for it, that he thinks he's seeing bits and pieces of the Kris he met in Korea behind the mask of Duizhang and Exo-M's Kris. It could just be Tao's delusion, that he thinks Kris is having the same problems he is because he wants to identify with Kris so much, but honestly I wrote it so that Kris does have that little bit of doubt, just smothered under denial and his... adultness. Maturity! There we go.

As for the "whose words are coming out of Kris's mouth" part, that comes from the emphasis on mouths in the poem tbh lol. So instead of "I still taste like someone else's mouth" referring to the ex-lover, I had it refer to whether it's... Kris or Duizhang really answering Tao. Someone else. Yeah lol

Okay. Now for Tao. I wanted him to come off as only a little bit childish, but wanting to come off as mature.Tao does try very hard to act like an adult -- he wants to stay up until Kris, an actual adult in his eyes, goes to sleep; he knows he shouldn't complain and tries not to sound like a brat -- but in the end, he is still a teenager. Insecure and immature. I wrote him as still being freaked out about the whole "Crayon" recording incident and being affected so easily by the negativity online even when he's trying to be mature about it all and just. Yeah. And then there's that stroke of insight at the end, where he can recognize that even Kris, who he highly respects and looks up to and aspires to be, isn't perfect and isn't as mature and... confident (?) as he seems. idk. I hope I conveyed that.

As for any hints of Taoris. Honestly, I ship them. They were my first Exo ship. But I tried to write this where it could be taken as mere admiration, a platonic relationship between the two. I guess it was from reading so many complaints over at KFA about how Taoris is portrayed in fic and I just wanted to go for something mellow? Like, make it obvious that Tao admires Kris but not to make him completely controlled by that. I didn't get to work in any real banter, but I did want to level out their relationship a bit. idk if I succeeded though :(

Also, just for fun, my idea of the three-step routine was cleanser, toner, moisturizer while the five-step was cleanser, exfoliator, toner, moisturizer, and overnight facial mask. I don't really know if this is the proper order because all of the research I did actually contradicted each other at certain points, but ehhh. lol I tried at least to be legit! Also, the thing about the toner stinging is from personal experience ;__; I chose the exfoliator as the one step other than the mask to be described because it is the rougher scrub. Better at washing away unwanted things on your skin. Ahem.

Another long-ass A/N. Oi. /o\

Title: Old Man Winter
Fandom: Exo
Focus: Xiumin-centric
Genre: Gen
Rating: G
Length: Oneshot (drabble), 200 words
Summary: Exo celebrates Chanyeol's birthday and their first snowfall together. Minseok celebrates them, in his own way.

The first snow falls on November 27th. There's enough piled up that all forms of transportation -- all schedules -- are canceled. Chanyeol's outside first, tugging on the new boots Minseok had conveniently, knowingly, given him earlier. Baekhyun races after, Kyungsoo following with their forgotten scarves. The rest quickly follow, cheeks red for reasons other than the chill.

Minseok watches as they stare wide-eyed up at the sky and stick their tongues out in hopes of catching snowflakes, noses scrunched up and smiles broad. They're childish, endearingly so.

"Hyung, come play!"

He'd rather lie sprawled out, the cold soaking through his clothes. Chanyeol's birthday preparations had exhausted him, and it's not for the first time that Minseok feels ancient compared to these kids.

His musings abruptly stop when a snowball lands on his face.

"Sorry!" someone yells unapologetically, so despite his age and the chill in his bones, Minseok gathers a handful of snow and chases after the others like a child. If the frost nips a bit more sharply at their fingers, he's been overdue for payback anyway. He might as well enjoy this, enjoy them before everything melts away.

"Best present ever!" Chanyeol laughs breathlessly. Minseok grins, agreeing.

Prompt:Taken from seouldout's Round 6 Challenge Four:
1. Word set: frog, snow white, secrets, cinderella
2. Picture:
City, glass windows by sirenchild @ tumblr

Author's Note: I thought I had this drabble nailed down when I was working on the first draft earlier this week, but in the end, I don't think my point came across as clearly as I would have liked :( The hints I put in were probably too subtle, but I usually explain my drabbles here anyway sooo. Ahem.

The word count really bit me in the ass this week, although I did find editing pretty easy this time around. Once I made the decision to cut some things out completely, it fit pretty nicely and does read coherently in my opinion. Although the point of the drabble is in danger of getting lost, as is the usage of one of the prompts.

Speaking of prompts, I used primarily the word prompt this time! When I first read them, I was a bit confused about what I could possibly do because it screamed "Fairy tale" which was just... kinda... obvious. To do, I mean. So I got to thinking, about (not-so) old ideas I never really got to flesh out and the one I found was a good fit. \o/

So, on the surface, we've got the first snowfall since Exo's debut occurring on Chanyeol's birthday, which provides the boys with the happy "coincidence" of having a day off and enjoying both due to the snow day. (Also, I looked up the day and it would have been a Tuesday, so no music show appearances anyway! Haha.) It's at this level we get three of the prompts: the others all look like frogs trying to catch flies with their eyes wide open and their tongues sticking out as they try to catch snowflakes instead, the snow fall is obviously related to the snow white prompt, and the gifting of boots is the shout-out to the gifting of the glass slippers in Cinderella.

But then underneath that surface, there's Xiumin's story even if it is Chanyeol's special day. I focused a lot on the image of what separates Xiumin from the others, and one of the easiest things is that he's the hyung of the group. Not just another hyung, not just one of the oldest -- he's the oldest out of all of the Exo members even if he doesn't look it at time. I wanted there to be this invisible line drawn between him and the rest, which is why I have him thinking about them all in terms of "kids" or "children". If I could, I would have portrayed their collective childishness even more, but there's no easy way to fit twelve people into 200 words without lumping them together.

So this drabble gets a bit introspective. Xiumin feels his age, tired and weary. But he gets up with these kids and plays with them, enjoying that youthfulness before it slips away the way snow can melt right as you touch it.

But then there's the secret layer to this drabble. It comes up in how Xiumin "conveniently, knowingly" gives Chanyeol brand new boots right before the first snowfall of the year, how he seems to enjoy soaking up the cold, how Chanyeol's birthday preparations tired him out when all we know is that he got Chanyeol boots, how the frost nips at the others when he's going after them for payback. Xiumin is actually Jack Frost, or some version of him. The whole nipping thing comes from the line "Jack Frost nipping at your nose" and one of the first lines I wrote was actually:

Minseok lets the cold nip a little at Lu Han's fingers, numbing them until the other boy finally gives up and grudgingly pulls on his mittens. There will be no cheek-pinching today, he thinks, which is a relief seeing as his face is already red from the cold. For that, he grins just a bit wider.

So the preparations Xiumin was working on was making it so that the first snow fell on Chanyeol's birthday. (None of the others would have been an option for a first snow, the next birthdays are in January.) He's tired from making it happen lol, because if you think about it, it should be a pretty monumental task. That's how he knew to get Chanyeol the boots too, hahaha. Him being a manifestation of a force of nature also suggests that he's, in my own words, "ancient" compared to the others who really would just be kids compared to him then lol. And that's the big secret. It also makes him a bit of the fairy godmother from Cinderella because the snowfall was really a gift for all of Exo.

And that leaves the explanation of the title. The "Old Man Winter" part should be obvious now that I've said he's a form of Jack Frost, but it also refers to his feeling old compared to the others. Feeling like he's in the winter of his life compared to the others being all youthful and energetic lol

Last notes: the payback... was for all the cheek-pinching and teasing he's had to endure hahaha. Xiumin's really a good sport though :) He's so great, I hope I got his "chill" nature captured. Heh. And the idea of him being Jack Frost comes from his ice powers from the MAMA promotions lol

Maybe I'll continue this one day. Probably not though.

Title: Turbulence
Fandom: Exo
Focus: Chen-centric, Chen/Xiumin
Genre: Fluff/Romance
Rating: G
Length: Oneshot (vignette), 411 words
Summary: On the flight from Incheon International to LAX, Chen and Tao banter while Xiumin sleeps.

The estimated flight time is almost twelve hours. Minseok spends a majority of that time emulating their leader at his very best, curled up in his seat with one of the airplane's blankets draped over him. His beanie has long since fallen off due to a mix of tossing and turning and turbulence, so Jongdae holds tight to it for him. If his fingers cling a little too tightly to the fabric, it's only because it's one of Minseok's new favorites. He can't exactly go losing it.

Minseok shifts in his seat and nestles his head on Jongdae's shoulder.

"He looks comfortable," Tao whispers from Jongdae's other side in shoddy Korean, and even without looking, Jongdae can tell the younger boy has turned away from the window. There's nothing interesting to see out there anyway, just a load of blue whether he's looking above or below. They're still a few more hours before landing, before they even catch a glimpse of land. "And you do too."

"Of course, we're in first class," Jongdae answers back in Mandarin, keeping his eyes focused on the seams of Minseok's beanie and his mind on whether he's using the right inflections, "That not good enough for you?"

Tao makes a face at him, even managing to shove him with one of his bony elbows. "Not what I meant."

Jongdae knows what Tao means though, even with the language barrier. There's a reason why one of Jongdae's shoulders is awkwardly lowered, why he's half-draped over the armrest between him and Minseok, why he hasn't been able to focus on the in-flight movie even though it has one of the best OSTs he's ever heard.

"You're a brat," he laughs, "and your Korean is still bad. I was wrong -- Sehun's is better." His throat is hoarse from the rehearsals they had before they left, from their long, ongoing flight over the endless Pacific. He's too used to singing songs he doesn't understand; words he doesn't mean no longer affect him.

Tao rolls his eyes and turns back to the window, his pride obviously wounded. His shoulders are hunched and he presses his forehead against the glass, staring out at the endless blue. Jongdae wonders what else he sees.

"Loser," Tao mutters grumpily in Mandarin, almost too low for Jongdae to hear it.

He tightens his grip on Minseok's beanie, wishes that it was warm flesh underneath his fingers instead of just fabric. He hears liar instead.

Prompt:
Twenty minute challenge, pick from five a-softer-world prompts
Author's Note: I probably didn't use twenty minutes to be honest. I didn't pay much attention to the clock, lol. Anyway, this was the aftermath of watching the kcon livestream on KFA last night and sorta liveblogging there. My Exo feels were shooting through the roof and I had been wanting to write something about M being in California since I saw that Xiumin and Chen sat together on the bus lol

Anyway, this is basically just three members of Exo M during their flight from Incheon International to LAX -- I looked up the approximate flight time and everything. It should really be 11h 46 m, but I rounded up. The seat order is window - Tao - Chen - Xiumin - aisle which was based on how they came out of the plane. Older China-line is probably in another row of seats. Thinking about it now, idk what first class is like but it'd probably be just two seats in a row instead of three, right? OTL Whoops.

But anyway, it's Tao and Chen ragging on each other while practice Korean and Mandarin, respectively, while Xiumin sleeps away. I originally wanted to do something about the International Date Line, something like"

Jongdae presses his cheek down against the top of Minseok's hair, trying to ignore how it prickles against his skin. Minseok's mouth hangs open a little as he takes soft, even breaths. If only Jongdae's pounding heart would let him do the same.

But he wouldn't trade this; instead he wishes he had more time to savor it. They don't get much of this, whether it's back in China where all they have time for is practicing Mandarin with each other or back in Korea when there's ten other people vying for attention.

"Chenchen, we passed the International Date Line," Tao whispers, still staring out the window as if expecting to see that imaginary demarcation, "how many more hours do we get?"

Jongdae chuckles a bit bitterly, leaning even more on Minseok. The older boy makes a whining noise in his sleep, but presses back just as much.

"Definitely not enough."

Yeah. Didn't manage it though lol -- no time. Anyway, I simplified the dialogue as much as I could to emphasize that Tao's still not an expert in Korean and Chen's still having trouble with Mandarin. As for Chen's hoarse throat, that comes from him having missed so many of his notes and not being able to hold some of his glory notes during the actual concert :( And the turbulence in the title refers to Jongdae's feelings in addition to the whole "being on a plane" thing lol. He's being wishy-washy about his feelings anyway.

Not much else to add here, but maybe I'll continue this so that it spans the whole kcon trip? That'd be cool.

Title: Asymptote
Fandom: Exo
Focus: Suho-centric
Genre: Gen, mild angst
Rating: G
Length: Oneshot (drabble), 200 words
Summary: Joonmyun's a leader, but he has his limits.

2009's a momentous year: DBSK cracks into two, Super Junior chips into fragments, SM debuts their last group for three years. Joonmyun watches with ridiculously misplaced hopes as his contract changes, most of the terms just prettily, precisely reworded.

It's not for the last time. By 2011 he's well-versed enough to comb through twelve contracts with Yifan one night, armed with pens and dictionaries -- Korean, Chinese, English, legal. The smallest differences are circled, cross-analyzed, counted. He doesn't know what numbers to look for, just that they should be the same. Numbers determine debuts and disbandments.

"Is it really important?" Yifan asks, rubbing his eyes with ink-smeared fingers. Joonmyun stares at them despairingly. A group split down the middle -- strained by distance, differences, dreams -- is a bad enough start. How can they protect Exo if the odds are already against them?

But then, that's his job. Being leader's more than a label, and "I'm Exo's Guardian" actually means something.

A nightlight's batteries die out eventually though, dream-catchers dry up over time -- Joonmyun is just as aware of his own limits. He'd like to be an Eric, but it'd be a miracle if he could just be Suho.

Prompts: Taken from seouldout's Round 6 Challenge Three:
1. Word set: drunk, trouble, attention
2. Picture:
Dream catcher by morphinetheory @ tumblr

Author's Note: I honestly only used the picture prompt for this. :( Mostly because I have no experience being drunk, although I did think of ways I could have interpreted that differently. But anyway, yes. Picture prompt, which was of a dream-catcher this week! Honestly, for starting out with as good an analysis as I had this week, I just couldn't do justice to this prompt and that makes me pretty regretful :(

So. What does a dream-catcher mean. Obviously a dream-catcher... catches dreams. Haha, I actually had to go look up things about dream-catchers and I found a few interesting points! While a dream-catcher has protective qualities in that it filters good dreams from bad and allows the good ones to trail down to the sleeper's head, they are actually meant to dry out and break over time! Well, the wood and sinew they're made out of are supposed to, because the sleeper eventually has to learn to sleep without depending on them for good dreams. So that was my theme -- limited protection, protection with a limit.

Here, Joonmyun is worried about Exo's future. Since it takes place in 2011, this was before Exo debuted, but after they were put together as a group. Joonmyun, as the longest-running SM trainee, has seen what happens in SM. The breaking imagery of DBSK and Super Junior were deliberate so it'd match the breaking of the dream-catcher. Anyway, because of what happened with JYJ and Han Geng, the SM trainees had their contracts changed. Also, at the time of f(x)'s debut, it was assumed that SM's next boyband would be released in 2010. We -- and here, Joonmyun -- were wrong. Here he thought the new contract meant a closer debut + better conditions, but he was wrong on both counts.

Fast-forward to 2011, he's working with Yifan who hasn't taken on the name of Kris yet, the same way Joonmyun hasn't taken on the name Suho yet. They're going through the contracts because if there are too many differences -- specifically in the amount of money earned and the number of years someone is contracted to -- the group is more likely to be unstable and have tension. Too many differences, too many marks (the ink on Yifan's fingers) make Joonmyun nervous. That's why numbers are important -- cost and profit are driving factors in producing an idol group and Joonmyun knows that, and a difference in the numbers will ultimately hurt Exo.

The last two parts... focus on the protecting imagery. Suho means "Guardian" and Joonmyun wants to protect Exo -- for his sake, for the group's sake. But he has his limits, the way a nightlight and a dream-catcher (both protective images) would. There's only so much he could do. The asymptote in the title refers to these limits and to Joonmyun's aspirations at becoming someone like Shinhwa's Eric, who successfully kept his group together for 14 years after having to pretty much buy the group with his own money. Joonmyun doesn't ever see himself becoming like Eric, however much he'd like to, like in an asymptote, the line never meets a certain point. :(

And that's pretty much it. I didn't pull as much from the prompts this time, so I'll probably try to do an alternative drabble that does.

Title: Livin' Eyes Wide Shut
Fandom: Exo
Focus: Suho-centric
Genre: Gen, Angst
Rating: G
Length: Oneshot (drabble), 200 words
Summary: Joonmyun's a toy soldier, losing his soul.

Walking around alone isn't a luxury Joonmyun receives often for the same reason he has his hood pulled low, a scarf wrapped too tight around his neck. Even under the cover of darkness, he needs comfort, protection. Armor.

But then he hears them -- not the sounds of a busy crowd, the echoes of shadowing footsteps. Joonmyun's a Seoul boy, a people person.

It's the tell-tale clicks. Rapid-fire, never-ending, sounding closer with every step. Flashes go off in his periphery. He should be used to it, but as the shadows grow the pressure builds, weighing heavy on his chest. Squeezing him tight until a stale smile breaks out. Not Joonmyun's smile -- small, weary, chipping at the corners -- but Suho's.

The smile carves itself into Joonmyun's face, the mask pressing down until he can't breathe. But it can only take so much pressure before shattering to pieces, embedding into his skin and--

His eyes jolt open.

The bedroom is quiet, flooded with the morning's hues. A deep breath, a heavy sigh -- he almost relaxes until realizing they belong to a sleeping Sehun instead. A bitter reminder.

Inhaling the remains of Kim Joonmyun, Suho smiles complaisantly.

So it goes.

Prompts: Taken from seouldout's Round 6 Challenge Two:
1. Word set: espionage, dream, sunrise
2. Picture:
Lego by onelego365days @ tumblr

Author's Note: This week's response to the seouldout challenge. I honestly wasn't sure if I would be able to complete it this week, but I put off working on a lab report and studying for a test to polish it up before the deadline tomorrow. :)

So. The very first thing that should be noted is that I have an unhealthy amount of affection for the dichotomy between stage/real life personas of idols. Keep that in mind throughout this lol. The second, and far more important, thing is that both prompts were used for this and that through idea association, they both led to me using
Epik High's Scenario (Paranoia Part 2) ft. MYK as my primary inspiration. When I saw the Lego-man for the first time, I found myself singing the lines

"Goemul gateun na I'm an old boy,
A toy soldier losin' my soul, boy.
In this matrix, the devil plays tricks,
And there's no great escapin' this."

And then I went and looked up the lyrics and, well, it really does match the paranoia theme in its title. There's talk of chases and stalking and murder and how all of it is just in the protagonist's head -- and that's what I wanted. That alone matched the espionage and dream parts of the word prompt really well, and also led to me picking the title from one of the English lines of the song.

As for what made me think of the Lego-man as a toy soldier, when he appears to be more of a pirate based off of the hat, the brown foreground (his boat) and the blue background (the sea) were his epaulets. Pretty minor, but the image wouldn't go away, haha.

Now for the serious part -- what is this actually about? The first part is actually Suho's dream, which is actually a very mundane nightmare. In real life, Suho seems to have this weird thing about being on camera -- he's very stiff, very awkward. He's a try-hard and a people-pleaser in my opinion but for some reason he can't handle a camera the way he's reportedly been able to handle people in real life for years now. It's a very interesting contrast, so much so that I made it so that his paranoia is centered around the cameras following him rather than the people. This part was also inspired by the recent Tao incident and sasaeng fans in general.

As the pressure -- to perform for the cameras, to put up a front -- builds up, it starts chipping away at everything that makes him Joonmyun and even starts straining his "Suho" mask until it breaks. Because that would be the worst case scenario (pun unintended) -- that he loses that control over his image in addition to losing himself. The shock of it is what actually wakes him up, and for those first few moments he's thinking he's just a regular guy again. No pressure, no anything.

But then he realizes he's sharing a room with Sehun, the youngest in his group. It's a realization that he is still Suho, that he's living a high-pressure lifestyle, that he has this role to play, that his dream -- while highly exaggerated -- is an extension of his reality. The dream may be over, a new day may have begun, but his... "role-playing" never ends. That's one reason why I use Kurt Vonnegut's "So it goes" from Slaughterhouse-Five as an allusion here, to portray that sense of weariness and endlessness. There's nothing Suho can do about his situation really. (As for the other reason I used that line, it's because the part of the song "Scenario" that inspired me most is chock-full of allusions so it keeps to that theme.)

A few more points: the "armor" in the first section is another nod to the toy soldier theme, and the idea of "Suho" is also a type of armor. "Complaisant" means "to be inclined to please; to be agreeable, obliging" and refers to his try-hard, people-pleasing ways I mentioned earlier. "Inhaling the remains of Kim Joonmyun" basically refers to him sucking up and holding what's left of him (his broken pieces, the soul he's losing) inside of himself underneath the mask of Suho.

As for the title -- it comes from a line in the song that goes "Livin' eyes wide shut in this city of blindness" which felt fitting since Suho is dreaming and that's not supposed to be obvious until his eyes "jolt open". Living eyes wide shut means he's in that dream, and he continues living that way even after he wakes up. There are other allusions to the song throughout the drabble too. It was fun. I love this song, probably listened to it twenty times a day this week.

Title: Washed Out
Fandom: Exo
Focus: Kai-centric, slight Suho/Kai
Genre: Gen, mild angst
Rating: G
Length: Oneshot (drabble), 200 words
Summary: Kai takes a shower, Suho interrupts.

Jongin breathes in the steam rising around him. He rests his head against smooth glass, letting the spray of hot water wash away all signs of the day and watching as the droplets race down the paths forged by his hard-earned sweat. When he's like this -- hidden away behind a frosted door, shut off from the world of cameras and fans and never-ending dance practices -- it's easy to forget everything.

All it takes to break the illusion is one word.

"Jongin?"

He groans at the interruption, at the shadowy figure approaching from beyond the door. Eventually, he can see the dull orange of Joonmyun's stupid sweater through the glass. The faint outline of hands appear, cupped around a pair of eyes Jongin doesn't bother meeting.

"Is your back okay? You're supposed to take it easy."

Jongin holds back the growl in his throat, but not the scowl on his face. The glass can only hide so much from someone who's known him for five years.

"I'm fine. I'm done."

Even the running shower can't drown out the sounds of resignation, of a retreat. Jongin watches the last of the water slip through his fingers and into the drain.

Prompts: Taken from seouldout's Round 06 Challenge One
1. Word set: water, heart, black and white (from in_vazn)
2. Picture:
Strangers. London, England. July 2012. by chattelatte @ tumblr

Author's Note: I'm not participating in seouldout, not officially. I decided to give it a try though on my own, which means I'll be following the prompts and the deadlines. This is a writing exercise for myself. A word count limit is actually very difficult to meet, I was constantly going over. This drabble actually uses both prompts as in inspiration. My explanation will likely be longer than the drabble itself, so sit tight or skip it. Either one.

How it meets prompt 1:
There is obviously water all over the place since Kai is in the middle of a shower. The heart is formed when Suho is trying to peer through the frosted glass door at Jongin. If you cup your hands around your eyes, it makes a heart shape. The black and white are actually covered in two ways: one is in how very straight-foward Kai is towards Suho, and the other is Suho's shadowy figure behind the frosted glass -- which often appears off-white. I should know, I googled it.

How it meets prompt 2:
My analysis of the photo prompt was that is was essentially about the disconnect between two people, as seen by the two people about to walk past each other, probably not even meeting eyes. A disconnect where you either can't meet eyes (the frosted glass obscuring Kai and Suho's views) or you refuse to (Kai not even trying). The fact that the bridge was in the picture, but the people were far away from it made me think of a failed attempt to bridge a gap between people. The gray color of the picture inspired the somber, distant tone. The orange of Suho's sweater comes from the woman's jacket in the photo -- it is eye-catching, but not enough to actually result in the meeting of eyes between people. And then there's the river -- the Thames to be exact. I don't know how it is now, but when I read Heart of Darkness it had a reputation as being polluted, which was another reason for the somber, resigned tone. It also led to the use of water lol. There's also the sense of isolation in the photo, that was transferred over to the drabble by putting Kai in what was essentially a glass box lol

There's more I wanted to say in this drabble. I originally thought I would have had enough words to fit in a non-argument where Kai thinks more about Suho and Suho firmly identifies himself by his role as Suho, the leader of Exo-K and Kai's hyung rather than as Joonmyun. I wanted to have Kai tell Suho to stop smiling, which he knows Suho is doing even when he can't see his face clearly through the frosted glass. I planned for more dialogue actually. I'm glad I got the "I'm done" part in, because it's showing Kai's unwillingness to open up to Suho. He says "I'm done (with my shower)" and means "I'm done with you. I'm done with this discussion." The title barely connects to this train of thought -- "Washed out" refers to Kai's weariness in addition to being a shower pun.

I guess the only other thing I'd like to point out is the ending. It's a bit of a pun -- Suho is the water slipping through Kai's fingers due to the lack of understanding between them, and this is happening as Suho is finally leaving Kai alone. And also, Suho's "power" is water control. While Kai is, by this point, "drained". Heh. And that by that point, it should be possible to read the "resignation/retreat" part as applying to either Suho (who is backing down) or Kai (who isn't even bothering, is hiding away).

Final note: an unofficial inspiration was Maroon 5's "Payphone", specifically the part where "all of our bridges burnt down". About the futility of a relationship where one person isn't even trying.
